KEY TEXT: Psalm 37:1-2 (KJV) – “1 Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.”
Notice verse two says ‘cut down and whither.’ This phrase means that God will eradicate them. God will not trim them and leave some of them to remain. They will be cut down and withered. Whatever they have will be cut down with them, and it will fade as well because God does not delight in evil.
Evil is compared to grass. Grass proliferates quickly, but it is weak and does not go far in stature. It does not grow to be exceedingly long, broad, or firm. Evil people might have increased with their wicked efforts, but they will not go far in their wickedness, just like the grass. They may have little success, which may seem much in the eyes of some people. However, if they had submitted themselves to God, God would have given them tremendous success rather than the counterfeit one they got from their wicked efforts.
Jeremiah 17:11 (KJV) – “As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.”
Jeremiah 17:11 gives an excellent comparison of the success of the wicked. Sitting on eggs and not hatching them is equivalent to having riches that do not bear fruit. It is also equal to having wealth for a shorter time than expected. The patridge sits on her eggs but leaves the hatching done by another bird of a different kind. This comparison means that the righteous will enjoy the wicked’s efforts.
Let us look at some of the curses, God promises the disobedient (wicked):
Deuteronomy 28:30 (KJV) – “Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.”
Deuteronomy 28:33 (KJV) – “The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up;”
Deuteronomy 28:38-39 (KJV) – “38 Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it. 39 Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them.”
In the above verses, we see that even though the wicked will get riches, they shall not enjoy them. All their hard work will be in vain, for they will not get anything from their efforts.
The verse below exemplifies it further:
Proverbs 13:22 (KJV) – “A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (KJV) – “7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.”
While the Bible compares the righteous to a tree, the wicked are compared to grass (Psalm 37:2), the green herb (Psalm 37:2), and the heath (Jeremiah 17:6). A tree takes longer to grow than grass. But it grows longer, broader, and stronger than the grass, the green herb, and the heath. One can easily uproot grass with one hand, but for a tree to be uprooted, it takes the tremendous effort of a multitude of strong men.
As a Christian, when you see the wicked look like they are being blessed, do not fret. Do not be envious of them because God’s work inside you is excellent. He develops you into a robust tree that nobody can easily cut down like grass.
Psalm 73:1-3 (KJV) – “1Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. 2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. 3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”
In Psalm 73, David almost lost his faith when he saw the wicked prosper. However, in the latter end, God made him king over them and made him more remarkable than all of them. The story of David is narrated over thousands of generations, but nobody in this present age knows who the ‘prosperous’ wicked that David envied were. This example clearly shows that the prosperity of the wicked is temporary.
Be Patient on God’s Promises
2 Peter 3:9 (ESV) – “The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness.” God is not slow, therefore, be patient and let Him do His work in you.
Isaiah 30:18 (NKJV) – “Blessed are all those who wait for Him.”
Luke 18:7-8 (KJV) – “7And will not God give justice to His elect, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you, He will give justice to them speedily.”
Nkosana Makate is a South African man who invented the “please call me” function for Vodacom, which happens to be a parent company of Kenya’s Safaricom. He created it in 2001 and was not paid immediately for that invention. He worked for Vodacom and left in 2004. Twenty-one years later, in 2022, the court ruled that he should be compensated 1.3 billion dollars.
He would have been paid a tiny amount if he had been compensated immediately in 2001 after he created it. Maybe he would have been compensated less than 0.01% of what he has been paid now. This illustration is a powerful example that God is not slow concerning His promise. God does not delay, and sometimes he does not give you what you want immediately. However, His timing is always right. This illustration is also an incredible example of how nothing good you have done, especially out of a good motive, will be left unrewarded. God is not a robber. He pays for everything.
Therefore, always do righteousness.
Psalm 37:5 (KJV) – “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.”
