TREASURES IN THE FIELD

KEY TEXT: Matthew 13:44 (KJV) – “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.”

A treasure represents a highly valued thing.

Hidden means something that is concealed or kept out of sight.

A field represents somewhere that is open.

Having established that, let’s get a clear picture of what this verse means:

“The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field.” Hidden in a field means concealed in an open place. Since a field is an open place, the treasure’s location is known. It also means that it is not impossible or difficult to find it. If it were difficult to find, Jesus would have said: “It is like a treasure hidden in a secret and very secure safe”.

Try to picture things like gold, pearls, rubies, diamonds, and other precious minerals; it may take years upon years for you to discover their location. But once you know the exact location, you will mine and finally find them. Regarding that, we can also say that the treasure Jesus is talking about has its location known. To find it, you must search diligently at that specific location.

If you search for it diligently, you will find it. Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) – “and is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Matthew 7:7 (KJV) – “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” This verse can also mean that if you don’t ask, no one will give it to you. If you don’t seek, you won’t find, and if you don’t knock, no door will be opened because how will a person know that you are at the door and haven’t knocked?

You can’t find what you have not sought, and no one can answer you a question that you haven’t asked. Determination causes people to get access to safes in banks that are highly secure and guarded. Therefore, finding a treasure hidden in a field is ultimately easy. The problem is that most people can’t find it because they are too busy (doing other things). We preoccupy our minds with things that make us uneasy. As a result, we become needy and sometimes greedy.

Someone selling all that he has to buy that field means that the treasure is of more importance than all that he has struggled to get in his lifetime. This also means that even though it is not very difficult to find, it is of more value than worldly acquisitions, which take a lot of struggle to find.

Genesis 3:17, KJV- “cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.” After Adam and Eve sinned, worldly possessions became extremely difficult to find. The treasure that Jesus talks about is easier to find than worldly possessions, and in our minds, it will form an everlasting impression because it comes from the Infinite One.

The fact that the man who finds it goes on to sell all that he has to buy the field represents the act of living straightforwardly because the man has the option of stealing it, but he chooses instead to follow the correct procedure of buying it. The man would rather sell all he has and remain with nothing to buy that field than disobey God’s commandments. Luke 13:24 (KJV) – “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” By selling all he has, the man strives to enter at the strait gate.

Imagine yourself in that field searching for the said treasure. What is likely to happen?

Let’s look into some possible scenarios:

  1. It may rain in the field, and therefore the rain may delay you in finding the treasure.
  2. Wild animals may come and threaten your life.
  3. Distractions may come that may make you lose focus.
  4. You may start doubting if the treasure is there.
  5. Forces that seem more powerful than you may start fighting you, making you lose hope.
  6. Your family and friends may discourage you, mock you and even make you think you are foolish.

All this means your search for this beautiful treasure is not void of challenges. Your response to these challenges is what matters most. Matthew 5:10 (KJV) – “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” On your Christian journey, many people will persecute you like how they persecuted Naboth, Daniel and his friends, Peter, Stephen, Paul and even Jesus, but they never lost hope. They were determined, and their determination paid off.

Acquiring salvation needs 100% surrender and commitment to God, Luke 18:29-30 (KJV) – “29 And He said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, 30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”

Acts 14:22 (KJV) – “Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. “

The keyword here in Acts 14:22 is ‘must’. To get to heaven, we need to have a high-level determination. We cannot go there with half-heartedness.

If the man found that treasure and didn’t know its value, would he sell all he had to acquire it? No. You work so hard to earn money because you know and understand the value of money, but if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t work hard. If the man didn’t understand the value of the treasure, he wouldn’t bother to take it. Most of us don’t understand the value of the Bible, we do not understand the value of praying, we do not understand the value of God’s commandments, and that is why we are struggling so much with life. The treasure that we are looking for is not difficult to find. It is in an open place.

Many Christians have shelves filled with Bibles and Christian books, which are never opened. The answers to your questions are in God’s Holy Book. The Bible is the foundation of all knowledge. Many pay thousands of dollars to secular mentors and coaches and neglect the Bible. They don’t understand that these mentors have finite knowledge while the Bible has infinite knowledge and wisdom.

Many will buy hundreds of secular books to guide their life’s journey. Mentors and books have their place. However, you can find all the advice they give if you read and meditate on the Word of God. Any truthful, good and profitable advice in all these books has its root in the Bible because every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17).

“The mental value of Bible study consists not only in searching out truth and bringing it together, it consists also in the effort required to grasp the themes presented. The mind that is occupied only with commonplace matters becomes dwarfed and enfeebled. If never tasked to comprehend grand and far-reaching truths, it loses the power of growth.” – True Education, Page 74, Ellen G. White.

“Nothing can equal the study of God’s Word as a safeguard against this degeneracy and a stimulus to development. As a means of intellectual training, the Bible is more effective than any other book or all other books combined. No other study can impart such mental power as does the effort to grasp the stupendous truths of revelation. The mind thus brought into contact with the thoughts of the Infinite will expand and strengthen.” – True Education, Page 74, Ellen G. White.

Having the Bible as the foundation of all knowledge will also help you to discern between truth and error from anyone giving you advice because some people can give you advice that sounds right but not righteous.

We can erase most of our struggles if we take the time to study and follow God’s Word. If we obey God, we will live a blessed life. Each commandment of God, including the Sabbath carries a blessing. Luke 18:30 (KJV) – “Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for revealing the treasures of Your kingdom through Your Word. Help me to value it above all else, to seek You with diligence, and to surrender fully to Your will. Give me wisdom to discern truth, strength to overcome distractions, and determination to endure trials as I pursue the eternal riches You offer. May I never exchange Your truth for temporary gain but hold fast to the treasures of heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
