THE PATH OF THE JUST

KEY TEXT: Proverbs 4:18-19 (KJV) – “18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. 19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.”

A righteous life is a life of constant improvement. It is not a life of immobility but of continuous forward movement. The concept of eternal life is a concept of continuity to infinity. God is a non-stop God, and He desires us to go fast and forward in a non-stop motion. He is a God who wants us to get promotion after promotion.

The path of the just is bright as the shining light. In contrast, the road of the wicked is very dark. It is ultimately easy to navigate one’s way in the daytime because of the magnificent and extraordinary bright light from the sun. This light makes it easy for you to get from point A to point B, enabling you to see things. However, it is strenuous to move at night, and there are no street lights because you can barely see anything.

The path of sin is not just like nighttime. It is like a man walking at night with his eyes closed. That is why Christ said in Luke 23:34, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Christ understood the people who were crucifying Him. He knew they didn’t know what they were doing because they wouldn’t be doing that if they knew.

The people who tortured Christ and crucified Him did not understand how dangerous it is to cause pain for a righteous man; 1 Chronicles 16:22 (KJV) – “Touch not Mine anointed, and do My prophets no harm.” In 2 Kings 2:23-24, God sent two bears to kill forty-two children who had laughed at Elisha (God’s prophet) because of his bald head. Even though he was a prophet, Elisha was a human being with a sinful nature. Jesus was sinless and He was God at the same time. If God did that for Elisha and other righteous human beings, how much more would He have done for Christ? The people who crucified Christ did not know that Christ created them and all life flows from Him, as He says in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

When there is light, you can avoid all sorts of danger that lie along your path. You can’t avoid danger when it is dark because how can you avoid something you can not see? Thus, the wicked persist in their wickedness despite facing countless consequences. They have been enslaved to evil because sin enslaves the sinner.

Isaiah 14:17 (KJV) – “That opened not the house of his prisoners?” Isaiah 58:6 (KJV) – “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”

Sin ties you and locks you up. It gives you heavy burdens. Someone hearing the Word of God but persists in sin is like a prisoner who stays in prison after being freed. It is like a person who continues carrying an ultra-heavy burden and walking with it for a very long distance while help is offered to him for free. He chooses to carry a 200 Kilogram bag of stones and walk ten thousand miles for a very long time while being offered a free ride on the fastest and most prestigious airplane.

Jesus came to free the captives (Isaiah 61:1). Jesus came to carry our burdens and give us rest (Matthew 11:28). Good rewards in life are the results of personal choices. Consequences are also the results of individual decisions. Let’s choose Jesus. He is the light of the world (John 8:12), and if we believe in Him, we shall not walk in darkness. He is the bread of life (John 6:35), the food that endures (John 6:27). Whoever eats of Him shall neither hunger nor thirst.

Matthew 15:14 (KJV) – “And if the blind lead the blind both shall fall into the ditch.” The blind cannot lead the blind. The blind need someone who sees to show them the way. Many problems we face in life come as a result of seeking ungodly sources for advice instead of seeking the Bible. Sometimes we are the ungodly sources and tend to lean on our understanding. As a result, our life struggles with tiny gains, stagnation, and degradation because there is little or no light.

God desires us to improve in all aspects of our life. He expects our lights to shine more and more. We are responsible for taking our life backward when we return to the sin Christ has already delivered us from. Therefore, we need to avoid relapses at all costs and ask Christ to help us overcome them, so we don’t get back to square one.

Judas Iscariot had a tremendous opportunity to encounter Christ one-on-one but was lost (John 17:12) because he persisted in the sin of greed. He cherished that sin in his heart. He was the treasurer and always stole money from the money box (John 12:6). His love for money made him betray Christ, and he ended up taking his own life after betraying Christ.

Sin damages the sinner more than they have hurt the other person. Deuteronomy 28:7 says, “They shall come out against thee one way and flee before thee seven ways” (On the blessings of obedience). Deuteronomy 28:25 says, “Thou shalt go out one way against them and flee before them seven ways” (On the curses of disobedience). When someone commits an act of injustice against you, they get hurt more than they have hurt you. They may seem like all is going well and may not come and tell you because of pride, but they are hurting more than you are hurting. All along, while Judas Iscariot was stealing money from the money box, God knew but still gave him a chance to repent and turn his ways which he did not.

The path of the just keeps getting brighter as he continues his walk upon it. As a righteous person strolls through the journey, they increase in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. They also grow in all spiritual fruits and spiritual gifts. They improve their skills and talents as well. God’s blessings and favor increase for a man who walks along the straight and narrow path. He grows in material wealth, health, social life, and, most importantly, spiritual life.

The word path as mentioned in the Bible signifies continuous movement. As you move a step ahead, the road gets brighter. As you stop moving, the path stops shining. Therefore, if you want the path to shine more, you must keep going. This ideology applies to a person’s spiritual life. You get a deeper spiritual understanding if you engage more in spiritual activities. When you obey God once it becomes easier to obey Him the second time. When you keep the Sabbath once, it becomes easier to keep it the second time.

This principle also applies to social life. You get more networks if you interact with more people. People get to trust you more when they spend more time with you and realize that you are a reliable and trustworthy person. This concept also applies to skills.

You get better at a skill the more you do it. This phenomenon applies in business. Your business flourishes more the more you understand it, and you get to understand it if you spend a lot of time on it, “That which at first seems difficult, through constant repetition grows easy until right thoughts and habits become habitual” – Our High Calling, Page 116, Ellen G. White.

“Do Not Neglect Opportunities for Improvement — If the worker has consecrated himself fully to God and is diligent in prayer for strength and heavenly wisdom, the grace of Christ will be his teacher, and he will overcome his defects and become more and more intelligent in the things of God. But let none take license from this to be indolent, to squander time and opportunities, and neglect the training that is essential in order to become efficient. The Lord is not pleased with those who, having had opportunities to obtain knowledge, neglect to improve the privileges placed within their reach.” – Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 510 (1893), Ellen G. White.

“Do something every day to improve, beautify, and ennoble the life that Christ has purchased with His own blood.” – Ministry of Health and Healing, Page 288.2, Ellen G. White.

The kingdom of heaven is about improvement, increase, and abundance. The kingdom of hell is about decrease and scarcity, always resulting in losses instead of profits.

GOD BLESS YOU AS YOU WALK ALONG THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW WAY!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for lighting my path and calling me to walk in Your truth. Help me to grow daily in wisdom, love, and righteousness. Keep me from the darkness of sin and teach me to value progress over perfection. Let my life shine more and more, bringing glory to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

Create a small journal or notebook titled “My Brighter Path.” Each day, write down:

  • One step of improvement you made today (spiritually, mentally, physically, or socially).
  • One Bible verse that encouraged your journey (start with Proverbs 4:18).
  • One area where you still need God’s help to grow.
  • One small action you will take tomorrow to keep moving forward in your walk with Christ.
  • Share this message with someone.
