GOD’S VINEYARD

KEY TEXT: Isaiah 5:1-6 (KJV) – “1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.”

Verse 1 starts by saying that God has a vineyard on a very fruitful hill. The word very is used to emphasize how the hill is fruitful. The soil, climate, and air quality are highly conducive to growing grapes.

Isaiah says that God put a fence or a hedge around that vineyard. Putting a fence around it is a means of protecting it. He watches it so that the devourer won’t come to steal or destroy anything from the vineyard.

The writer goes ahead and says that God has gathered out the stones. In the parable of the sower, Matthew 13:5 talks about the seeds that fell on stony places. The seeds that fell on rocky areas in this parable grew a bit, but since they had no deepness of the earth, they were scorched by the sun. Because they had no strong roots, they withered away. Now God has taken away the stones from the vineyard. He has done this so the vineyard can have deep and strong roots in the soil.

As if that is not enough, Isaiah says that God has planted the vineyard with the choicest vine. The Lord did not take any vine to grow it. God took the best vine in order to produce the best grapes. There are various grades among all plants and animals. It is logical to expect the highest grade of a certain plant’s seed to produce the highest quality of fruit, just like how you hope the highest-grade cow to have the best milk.

“And built a tower in the midst of it.” A tower was built for someone to sit at the top and watch over it. This action shows that there is full protection. It shows that there is no gap left as far as security is concerned. There is a fence around it and a watchman watching over it. A tower is built so that the person watching can see the enemy from a distance and block him from entering before he gets close to that place.

Lastly, we see the phrase, “And also made a winepress therein”. The winepress was made so that after the grapes had grown, the winepress would squeeze them and make wine out of them. God is extremely good. God has set a plan that even after the grapes have grown, he does not leave them. He sets up a winepress to process wine from them. This narrative shows that God has provided a complete system, leaving no gaps in that system. Therefore, it is logical for Him to expect good grapes.

Isaiah 5:4 (KJV) – “What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?” God has done everything that needs to be done and has reached a point that He has run out of options. This is an omnipotent God running out of options.

Through Calvary, God has provided us with everything we need to live a righteous life. He has provided everything we need to live a prosperous life. The keys to walk through the pearly gates and to live a successful life here on earth are with us. But instead of using them to produce the best, we lay waste of God’s efforts.

Let’s look at some of the things that God has given us:

  1. God has given everyone a gift – 1 Corinthians 12.
  2. God has given everyone a purpose – Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV) – “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
  3. God has placed us in a perfect environment – Genesis 1:31 (KJV) – “And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
  4. God has given us power over sin through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, His only begotten son. John 3:16 (KJV) – “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
  5. God has given us the Holy Bible. Everything we need to know is in it.
  6. God has given us counsel from Ellen White, among other Christian authors.
  7. God has given us genuine preachers and evangelists who preach the true word of God.
  8. With access to technology, he has provided us with applications to enable us to progress in our knowledge and understanding of His Bible. Nowadays, Bible commentaries and study guides are available with a click on google. There is YouTube, and one can access audio Bibles and various Godly videos. There are mobile applications that assist in memorizing scripture and assist in Bible study. There are social media groups and online spiritual events all over the internet.
  9. God has given us the Holy Spirit, who is God and is more than willing to guide us in all aspects of our lives.
  10. God has given us the Sabbath, a whole day to reflect on Him and count His divine blessings naming them one by one.

“It is impossible to enumerate the advantages the Lord prepared for the world in making the Jewish nation the repository of His rich treasures of knowledge. They were the subjects of His special favor. As a people who knew and worshiped the true God, they were to communicate the principles of His kingdom. They were instructed by the Lord. He withheld from them nothing favorable to the formation of characters which would make them fit representatives of His kingdom. Their feasts, the Passover, the Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles, and the ceremonies attending these gatherings, were to proclaim the truths that God had entrusted to His people. At these gatherings the people were to show gladness and joy, expressing their thanksgiving for their privileges and the gracious treatment of their Lord.” – The Upward Look, Page 232, Ellen G. White.

There is absolutely no reason for us to live sinful lives. There is no reason not to live a blessed life. And there would be no reason not to enter heaven.

“God is more desperate to get us into heaven than we are to enter.” – Pastor Randy Skeete.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for planting me in fertile ground, surrounding me with Your love, and providing all I need to grow. You have removed the stones, built a hedge of protection, and given me the best of heaven through Jesus Christ.

Forgive me, Lord, for the times I have brought forth wild grapes instead of the fruit You desired.
By Your grace and through Your Spirit, help me to bear good fruit, fruit that glorifies You and blesses others. May my life reflect the love, patience, and power of the Master Gardener.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

  1. Take a notebook or journal and divide a page into two columns:
    • Left column: “What God Has Given Me”
    • Right column: “What Fruit Am I Bearing?”
  2. In the left column, write down the spiritual, emotional, and physical blessings or resources God has provided you with (e.g., your spiritual gifts, Bible access, a church community, time, talents, etc.).
  3. In the right column, honestly assess what you’re doing with each gift. Ask:
    • Am I using this to serve God and others?
    • Is this producing godly fruit (Galatians 5:22–23)?
  4. End by writing a short action plan:
    • One habit to prune (remove).
    • One practice to plant or water (spiritual discipline, outreach, service, etc.).
  5. Share this message with someone.
