A TEACHABLE SPIRIT

KEY TEXT: Matthew 5:5 (KJV) – “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

True humility always has a blessing. It has benefits in this life and in the life to come. The difference between you and the problem you are facing is what you don’t know. Therefore if you acquire the knowledge you are missing, you will be able to overcome the problem you are facing. The more you learn, the more you earn.

Many assume because they are grown-ups and probably have reached a certain level of success, they cannot be taught. As a result, this leads to stagnation. Some people cling to traditional practices so much that new beneficial methods have less room in their lives. A good example is you have studied about the Sabbath and are convinced of the Sabbath message, but since you were brought up not keeping it, you decide to continue living that way.

Which kind of people are we supposed to learn from in society? Is it only rich and famous people? Remember that sometimes the person to lead you to your next level in life isn’t always a renowned successful person whom you highly esteem. Be careful with the people you look down upon. They may have the keys you need to unlock doors in life. Innumerable people in life only take advice from people whom they regard as successful.

While on this earth, Jesus was poor (2 Corinthians 8:9) but He had the most incredible message ever. He had the words of eternal life (John 6:68). John the Baptist lived in the wilderness and ate locusts but was great in the sight of God.

“After the ascension of Jesus, doctors, lawyers, priests, rulers, scribes, and theologians listened with astonishment to words of wisdom and power from unlearned and humble men. These wise men marveled at the success of the lowly disciples and finally accounted for it to their satisfaction from the fact that they had been with Jesus and learned of Him. Their character and the simplicity of their teachings were similar to the character and teachings of Christ. The apostle describes it in these words: “God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in His presence (1 Corinthians 1:27).” – Testimonies for the Church, Volume 4, Page 378.1, Ellen G. White.

John C Maxwell, in his book, “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth,” says, “Have a beginner’s mindset. If your attitude is like that of a beginner, you have no image to uphold and your desire to learn more is stronger than the desire to look good”.

In the same book, on page 250, John C. Maxwell says, “If you’re going to ask questions and allow yourself to fail, then you will at times look foolish. Most people don’t like that. Do you know what my response is? Get over yourself! As Roger von Oech says, “If we never tried anything that might make us look ridiculous, we’d still be in caves.” Instead, we need to be more like children. The thing I love about young children is that they just ask. They don’t worry if a question is foolish. They just ask it. They don’t worry about whether they will look dumb trying something new. They do it. And as a result, they learn. Richard Thalheimer, the founder of the Sharper Image, says, “It’s better to look uninformed than to be uninformed. Curb your ego and keep asking questions.” That’s great advice.”

Luke 18:16-17 (KJV) – “16 But Jesus called them unto Him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.”

Unlike adults, children are usually humble and teachable. They recognize that they don’t know and are open to learning more. Jesus says whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom of God with humility as a little child cannot enter.

Proverbs 16:18 (KJV) – “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

“It is your work, my brother, to humble yourself and not wait for God to humble you. God’s hand at times bears heavily upon men to humble them and bring them into a proper position before Him; but how much better it is to keep the heart daily humbled before God. We can abase ourselves, or we can build ourselves up in pride and wait till God abases us.” – Testimonies for the Church, Volume 4, Page 378.3, Ellen G. White.

Therefore, let us learn to be humble and embrace a teachable spirit.

Matthew 11:29 (KJV) – “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

GOD BLESS YOU!
