Do you want perfect health, my friend? It’s a gift that knows no end, In faith and obedience, we find the way, To cherish each moment, come what may.
Have faith in God, and He will heal you, In His loving arms, He’ll see you through, With every ailment, trial, and strife, He’s the source of hope, the essence of life.
Sickness was brought by sin, it’s true, Yet there’s hope in faith, for me and you,With every ailment, every pain, The promise of healing remains.
Faith brings healing, it’s a powerful force, In God’s loving arms, we stay the course,In times of trouble, and pain we bear, Faith is the answer, it’s always there.
Exodus 15:26 (KJV) – “And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”
Spirituality affects health.
Sickness came as a result of sin. If Adam and Eve didn’t sin, there would be no disease. God is telling us that if we obey Him, we shall have perfect health. He puts a lot of emphasis on obedience in this verse as a result of good health because health is extremely important to Him. First, He says, “If thou wilt diligently hearken,” the keyword is ‘diligently.’ You need to be exceedingly attentive to the voice of God, always having His commandments in your heart; that is why Psalm 1:1-2 says, “and in His law doth he meditate day and night.”
Secondly, Exodus 15:26 says, “and do that which is right in His sight.” The word ‘His’ is the keyword. Many things seem right to us but are not right in His sight, i.e., observance of the ‘any day’ Sabbath instead of the Seventh-day Sabbath, among other unbiblical religious practices. Also, we should emphasize the word ‘do.’ Some people know the truth but won’t do it. Knowing is not enough.
Thirdly, He says, ‘and wilt give ear to His commandments. This phrase is the third emphasis on obedience to God in this verse. Notice the words, ‘His commandments.’ Not anyone else’s commandments but God’s commandments. Matthew 15:9 (KJV) – “But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrine the commandments of men.” Doctrines such as ‘we don’t need to keep the commandments anymore” are formulated by men, not God. God is clear in Matthew 5:19 (KJV) – “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, the same shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” The same people who preach against the commandments will be angry if you steal from them or do any form of injustice to them. If the commandments were irrelevant, they should allow everyone to harm them.
There is a popular doctrine that many Christians like that says, “The commandments are not relevant to New Testament believers, and they are no longer binding after the cross.” John wrote the book of Revelation 70-80 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Revelation 22:14 (KJV)- “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
Fourth He says, “and keep all His statutes .”The keyword is all. The Bible (New Testament) says in James 2:10 (KJV), “Whosoever therefore shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point, he shall be guilty of all.” Why should we keep all of them? Exodus 20 (the chapter of the commandments) says in verse 1, “And God spake all these words saying.” Exodus 20:3-17 (the first to the last commandment) is written directly from God in direct speech and active voice. Moses could not even paraphrase it because of its holiness. We should keep all of them because God spoke all of them.
Obedience to God will result in tremendous health and wealth. God has emphasized obedience to His commandments four times in this verse but using different wordings. One of the reasons He has made such a strong emphasis is because He wants to clarify the importance of obedience, and He wants you and me to have perfect health.
“A Factor in Dealing With Disease—The power of the will is not valued as it should be. Let the will be kept awake and rightly directed, and it will impart energy to the whole being and will be a wonderful aid in the maintenance of health. It is a power also in dealing with disease.” – Mind Character and Personality, Volume 2, Page 690.1, Ellen G. White.
“By the exercise of the willpower in placing themselves in right relation to life, patients can do much to cooperate with the physician’s efforts for their recovery. There are thousands who can recover health if they will. The Lord does not want them to be sick. He desires them to be well and happy, and they should make up their minds to be well.” – Mind Character and Personality, Volume 2, Page 690.2, Ellen G. White.
The will is what guides our decisions to do right or wrong. God has made truth available to everyone. At the same time, He has given every human being free will to choose what’s right and wrong. Choices always have results. They either result in noble rewards or severe consequences. A will that is wrongly directed leads to the wrong results. Many harm their health through the choices they make. For example, Jesus tells us not to worry (Matthew 6:31). Some know this but choose to worry instead of putting their trust in God; therefore, they bring mental health issues upon themselves. The Bible says in Psalm 1:2 that blessed is the man who always has God’s word in his mind. Many cause damage to their minds by thinking evil. This evil, if done, continually causes poor health since every part of the body is controlled by the mind. The Bible should be the ultimate guide in all your major or minor choices. Your decision-making should be solely dependent upon the Bible.
Various people don’t base their decisions on the Bible because they think it doesn’t have everything they need to know. Some think the Bible is only relevant for spiritual development and not relevant to practical life. This is not true. The Bible may not have detailed knowledge of everything, but it is the foundation of all good knowledge/Truth. Every good and fruitful knowledge today has its roots in the Bible.
For example, the parable of the man who built his house on a rock and the one who built his house on sand (Matthew 7:24-27) outlays an engineering principle. Before tertiary studies on civil engineering were invented, this truth had been written in the Bible thousands of years before. The parable of the sower (Matthew 13) outlines an agricultural principle that for seeds to grow and flourish, they need to be planted in good soil.
Newton’s third law of motion in Physics, which states that for each and every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, has its roots in the Bible. Romans 6:23 (KJV) – “For the wages of sin is death” this verse shows the results (equal and opposite reaction) you will encounter if you choose to sin (action).
The programming logic of ‘IF-THEN ELSE’ applied in Information Technology for developing software, websites, mobile apps, games, etc., has its roots in the Bible. For example, God told Adam and Eve if they ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, then they would surely die else they would live (Genesis 2:16-17).
Deuteronomy 28 lists the blessings and curses of obedience and disobedience and uses the computer programming principle of IF THEN ELSE. Deuteronomy 28:1-14 gives a condition that if one obeys God, then they will encounter the blessings listed. Verse 15 to 68 lists the curses that will result in those who choose not to obey God (else). All good knowledge in every field of study in this world has its foundation in the Bible. The Bible is more accurate than the best scientific calculator or supercomputer.
In university, there used to be a common practice of students not going to school on the first day because the first day was for introductions only, and to many of us, introduction was not important. One day as I was trying to decide whether to go to school on the first day, God led me to Genesis 1:1, which says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Since God started in the beginning and I am created in His image (Genesis 1:27), I should have the habit of starting things from the beginning. I read Genesis 1:5, which says, “And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Therefore, if God started His work on the first day, who am I not to go to school on the first day? And so I realized that to be excellent, one should pay attention to small things.
Ecclesiasticus (KJVAAE) 19:1 says, “He that contemneth small things shall fall little by little.” The minor action of going to school on the first day got me opportunities that I would not have gotten if I had gone on the other days. I also realized that school is not just about the academics that you learn in class but the whole physical environment, and there is a reason why God has placed you in that physical environment. The Bible should not only guide you on major decisions, but it should also guide you on minor decisions.
“Improved Health Promised—Evil habits and practices are bringing upon men disease of every kind. Let the understanding be convinced by education as to the sinfulness of abusing and degrading the powers that God has given. Let the mind become intelligent and the will be placed on the Lord’s side, and there will be a wonderful improvement in the physical health.” – Mind Character and Personality, Volume 2, Page 690.4, Ellen G. White.
How can we accomplish this?
“But this can never be accomplished in mere human strength. With strenuous efforts through the grace of Christ to renounce all evil practices and associations and to observe temperance in all things, there must be an abiding persuasion that repentance for the past, as well as forgiveness, is to be sought of God through the atoning sacrifice of Christ. These things must be brought into daily experience; there must be strict watchfulness and unwearied entreaty that Christ will bring every thought into captivity to Himself; His renovating power must be given to the soul, that as accountable beings we may present to God our bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto Him, which is our reasonable service.” — Medical Missionary, November-December, 1892, Ellen G. White.
“The first health rule is confess your sins” – Pastor Randy Skeete.
May God give you the grace to obey Him because it is the key to perfect health. Trust in God because He is the master healer. If you are sick, may God heal you in the Mighty name of Jesus. The name above every other name of things in heaven, things on earth, and things under the earth. The name by which at its mention every knee shall bow.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we reflect on Exodus 15:26, we understand the profound connection between our spiritual obedience and physical health. Grant us the wisdom to discern what is right in Your sight, emphasizing not only knowing Your truth but also doing it. May we give ear to Your commandments, upholding all Your statutes, recognizing their holiness. We understand that obeying Your commandments is the key to perfect health and abundant life. We seek Your forgiveness for our sins, acknowledging our need for Your grace and the power of Christ to transform our lives. Help us to renounce all evil practices, observe temperance, and present our bodies as a living sacrifice. We lift those suffering from illness, praying for Your healing touch in the name of Jesus. Grant us the strength to walk in obedience, understanding it’s the key to perfect health, and may our trust in You remain unwavering. We thank You for being the master healer. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
