LET US GO DOWN

KEY TEXT: Genesis 11:5-7 (KJV) – “And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

Since men were going up, God had to come down to them.

Before we look at God coming down, let us examine how great God is.

Genesis 1:1 (KJV) – “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:2-5 (KJV) – “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”

Psalm 90:1-2 (KJV) – “1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.”

Isaiah 45:5 (KJV) – “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside Me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known Me:”

Exodus 20:1-3 (KJV) – “1 And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” In other words, the Israelites had no power of themselves to get themselves out of Egypt. No other god was able to get them out of Egypt except the one and only God.

Psalm 33:7-9 (KJV) – “He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: He layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spake, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.”

We have examined how great God is. now let’s look at how humble God is and how he loves coming down to us:

Eve attempted to go up to reach God’s level by eating of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, because the devil promised her that if she eats it, she will be like God. Immediately after they ate the fruit this is what happened: Genesis 3:8 (KJV) – “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.” God had to come down to the garden to talk to them. God is the most humble being in the universe. He knows because of guilt that comes as a result of sin, we run away from Him. Adam and Eve hid themselves after they noticed that they were naked. God had to come down to them to help them. It is like a young child who has fallen into a pit and an adult tries to lift him out of the pit. After man fell, God sent His son Jesus Christ down to this earth to save us from our sins.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV) – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

God is infinitely above us just as the heavens are higher than the earth.

Psalm 139:7-12 (KJV) – “Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from Thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to Thee.”

Psalm 139:7-12 is clear that God is omnipresent. He is everywhere. He did not have to come down to see what the men building the tower of Babel were doing. He is capable of seeing it from heaven. Secondly, He is everywhere. The phrase ‘coming down’ is a sign of His humility.

God comes down to our level in order to reason with us. Isaiah 1:18 (KJV) says, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord.” While Christ was on this earth, He used parables and simple explanations to make us understand deep spiritual lessons. For example, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed (Matthew 13:31), Consider the fowls of the air they sow not neither do they reap (Matthew 6:26), consider the lilies of the field (Matthew 6:28).

Jesus comes down to our level by using the natural world to explain spiritual lessons. Jesus came down to our level and took the form of humanity being born in the least of privileged places which was among animals, He ended up dying a more painful death than most of us do. By coming down on this earth, Jesus proved the devil wrong that the commandments of God were not grievous and God’s Word needs to be obeyed no matter how tough the situation we are facing is because He was among the poorest in society.

Matthew 8:20 says, “Foxes have holes, birds have nest yet the son of man has nowhere to lay His head.” Jesus was so poor (in material goods) that He could not afford to be born at least in a ghetto (where the poorest people live). He had to be born in a manger (where animals live) Jesus was insulted, ridiculed, treated with contempt, beaten and killed. He was rarely shown gratitude despite doing many good works (John 21:25). For example the story of the ten lepers, whereby only one came back to give Him thanks (Luke 17:11-19).

Because Satan acted with pride, Christ had to act with humility to defeat him. Christ could not counter Satan with pride because two wrongs don’t make a right. You can’t overcome darkness with darkness you have to overcome darkness with light. Pride sparked the fall, but humility won the war. Christ didn’t meet darkness with more darkness. He shattered it with the light of His lowliness. For the Lion overcame by becoming the Lamb.

“In stooping to take upon Himself humanity, Christ revealed a character the opposite of the character of Satan. But He stepped still lower in the path of humiliation. “Being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:8. As the high priest laid aside his gorgeous pontifical robes, and officiated in the white linen dress of the common priest, so Christ took the form of a servant, and offered sacrifice, Himself the priest, Himself the victim. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him.” Isaiah 53:5.” – Desire of Ages, Page 25.1, Ellen G. White.

“Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves. He was condemned for our sins, in which He had no share, that we might be justified by His righteousness, in which we had no share. He suffered the death which was ours, that we might receive the life which was His. “With His stripes we are healed.”” – Desire of Ages, Page 25.2, Ellen G. White.

As the true High Priest cast aside heaven’s robes for servant’s linen, so Christ laid down His crown to wear our sin-stained flesh, offering Himself both Priest and Sacrifice; wounded that we might find healing, bruised that we might rise in His victory.

After Christ came down these were the results:

“By His life and His death, Christ has achieved even more than recovery from the ruin wrought through sin. It was Satan’s purpose to bring about an eternal separation between God and man; but in Christ we become more closely united to God than if we had never fallen.” – Desire of Ages, Page 25.3, Ellen G. White.

Therefore, one lesson we can learn from here is: If you want to go up you need to come down. Matthew 5:5 (KJV) – “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.”

Philippians 2:8-11 (KJV) – “And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

When you are humble you realize that you don’t know everything, as a result, you are teachable, and once you are teachable you get to learn new things that you did not know. When you are humble you are open to interacting with all sorts of people of all classes and hence you are open to more opportunities. This is because you deeply understand that everyone is valuable. Secondly, one may be low today but you don’t know what the future beholds for them since the future is unpredictable. Therefore, be humble at all times and among all people.

A humble heart knows its own ignorance, so it listens and learns from every soul, welcoming strangers, seizing unseen opportunities, and trusting tomorrow to God’s unseen hand. Walk low today, for in lowliness we discover the heights of His grace.

“Remember the Sabbath day (Exodus 20:8).” The Sabbath is the Lord’s (Exodus 20:8). As we keep the Sabbath on top of our minds, we keep the Lord of the Sabbath on top of our minds as well. When we remember that it is through the power of God that we have the ability to live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28), we cannot be proud of whatever accomplishments we have made. We shall acknowledge that we are not our own, we are bought with a price and with humility we shall freely give what has been freely given to us.

Lastly, to conclude this topic let’s keep in mind that it is not what we do for God that will bring us to Him and to redemption. Instead, it is God’s move towards us and our total submission to Him that will save us.

Revelation 3:20 (KJV) – “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.”

God is right outside your door knocking. Welcome Him.

GOD BLESS YOU, SHALOM!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, You humbled Yourself to meet us where we are, confounding our pride and drawing us close. Teach us to ‘go down’ in humility, that we might rise in Your grace. Help us to listen, to serve, and to trust Your guiding hand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

  1. Pair Up – Find someone you don’t know well or who’s usually overlooked.
  2. Switch Places – The “higher” person (by age, position, or confidence) sits; the “lower” person stands.
  3. Serve & Listen – The seated person offers to fetch a glass of water, a note of encouragement, or simply asks a question about the other’s week, then listens quietly.
  4. Reflect Together – Spend 2–3 minutes sharing how it felt to step down and to be served.
  5. Pray – Close by thanking God for coming down to us and ask for eyes to see others as He does.
