KEY TEXT: Exodus 20:1 (KJV) – “And God spake all these words, saying.”
Exodus 20 is the chapter of the Ten Commandments. God looked down the ages and saw a time when people would keep most commandments and disregard some commandments, such as the Sabbath commandment. Therefore, the Ten Commandments chapter had to start with this profound statement (Exodus 20:1). The verse doesn’t say, “and God spake some of these words.” It says, “and God spake all these words.”
The ten commandments were spoken and written by God directly. No commandment is not important. All commandments were relevant to the New Testament as they were relevant to the old.
Here is a verse from the New Testament:
James 2:10 (KJV) – “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
Matthew 5:19 (KJV) – “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Deuteronomy 8:1 (KJV) – “All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers.”
We must keep all commandments that God has commanded us to do, and we must do them as He says and not according to our own opinions. That is not salvation by works. It is an expression of our love for God (John 14:15).
“Obedience—the service and allegiance of love—is the true sign of discipleship. Thus the Scripture says, “This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments” (1 John 5:3). “He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him,” (chap. 2:4). Instead of releasing man from obedience, it is faith, and faith only, that makes us partakers of the grace of Christ, which enables us to render obedience.” – Obedience, The Fruit of Faith, September 17, Ellen G. White.
“We do not earn salvation by our obedience, for salvation is the free gift of God, to be received by faith. But obedience is the fruit of faith. “Ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not” (chap. 3:5, 6). Here is the true test. If we abide in Christ, if the love of God dwells in us, our feelings, our thoughts, our purposes, our actions, will be in harmony with the will of God as expressed in the precepts of His holy law. “Little children, let no man deceive you; he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous” (verse 7). Righteousness is defined by the standard of God’s holy law, as expressed in the ten precepts given on Sinai.” – Obedience, The Fruit of Faith, September 17, Ellen G. White.
May God give you the courage to live by every word that proceeds from His mouth.
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Dear God, Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for the Ten Commandments and the blessings they carry. Please help me to take every commandment seriously, knowing that each one is a gift of love and guidance from You. Give me the strength to obey and to love You. Teach me to follow Your whole law with joy, and may my life reflect true faith through faithful obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activity
- Read Exodus 20:1-17 slowly and prayerfully.
- Reflect on each commandment one by one. Ask yourself:
- Am I living by this word from God?
- Do I sometimes excuse or neglect any part of it?
- How can I obey it more fully out of love, not duty?
- Write a response prayer or commitment next to each one. For example, beside the Sabbath commandment, you might write:
“Lord, help me to honor Your Sabbath and enjoy this weekly time with You.” - Bonus challenge: Teach someone else what you’ve learned. As Jesus said, those who do and teach the commandments will be called great in His Kingdom (Matthew 5:19).
