FAITH BEYOND SENSES: THROUGH FAITH, WE UNDERSTAND

The Word of God framed the worlds and everything that exists,

The invisible made the visible through the power the Word transmits,

Out of nothing, God’s Word brought life,

Out of His love, God’s Word promises eternal life.

For we live by faith, not by sight,

Trust in God, not your own eyesight,

Unlike your eyesight, in darkness, faith can see light,

Have it and conquer obstacles beyond your own might.

Your eyes can see through the day but barely through the night,

Faith can see through both, elevating to the highest height,

Through faith, we understand,

And by faith in God, we take a stand,

The Bible is our light and our lampstand,

For the power of God, none can withstand.

Let’s have faith beyond senses, faith beyond lenses, faith beyond guesses,

And faith beyond human letters, words, and sentences.

Hebrews 11:3 (KJV) – “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

The phrase ‘were not made of things which do appear’ means that all things created by God were made by something that exists but cannot be seen by the optical apparatus. God created everything through His Word. And even though His Word is invisible, it has the most incredible power beyond your imagination.

Being made in God’s image and likeness, He designed us that way. He formed us so that for us to do anything, it must be conceived in the thought first. Scientists who try to disprove God say that God did not create the world because, for something to come to existence, it needs to be made by a physical, tangible raw material. They ignore the fact that you need to use your mind first and engage your thoughts before you even source for those raw materials. By saying that, they don’t contemplate how powerful and impactful spoken words are, although not seen. It takes tremendous effort to say there is no God.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV) – “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

God gave us five senses. The sense of sight, the sense of taste, the sense of touch, the sense of smell, and the sense of hearing. He gave us these senses to gather and respond to environmental information. These senses help us to perceive danger and avoid it. They also allow us to perceive good things and embrace them. These five senses aid almost every activity we do in life. However, faith is not dependent on these senses.

Faith is a sense that is above the five senses. As much as the five senses are essential, and we should use them, we should put faith above them. We should trust in the One who created the senses and not the senses themselves. Therefore, when God gives you a promise, look forward to that promise. Don’t consider what your eyes can see, what your ears can hear, what your hands can touch, or what your body can feel. Trust in God.

When the Israelites went to battle with Goliath, they had no faith. That is why they were frightened. When they looked at Goliath, they saw He was a giant, more prominent than everyone in size. When they heard stories about Goliath, they heard he was a champion and had a recorded history of winning wars. David knew he could defeat Goliath before fighting him. This is because in as much as Goliath was enormous, his God was bigger. He knew he had an advantage that Goliath didn’t have. The advantage was David trusted in God while Goliath trusted in his strength.

1 Samuel 17:36 (KJV) – “Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.”

Lions and bears have bigger frames than the average human being. They are fiercer and physically stronger than humans. When we see such animals, the average man runs away from them because we know of the danger, they can do to us. David was no better than the rest of us. The only difference between him and the rest of us is that he had a courage that was not based on himself and his abilities but was based on God.

When he saw Goliath, he remembered his encounter with the lion and the bear and knew that God, who helped him defeat those two animals, would make him defeat Goliath too. When you apply faith, your faith increases. When you fail to use faith, your confidence will stagnate or decrease. David knew that the God in him was more powerful than the enemy he faced.

Even though the devil constantly brings us trouble, God is mightier than him because God’s Word created the devil. Psalm 33:6 (KJV) – “By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.” The Word of God created everything. We should trust it.

“We should not talk of our own weakness and inability. This is a manifest distrust of God, a denial of His Word. When we murmur because of our burdens, or refuse the responsibilities He calls upon us to bear, we are virtually saying that He is a hard master, that He requires what He has not given us power to do.”— Christ’s Object Lessons, Page 363, Ellen G. White.

“For forty days, the host of Israel had trembled before the haughty challenge of the Philistine giant. Their hearts failed within them as they looked upon his massive form, in height measuring six cubits and a span. Upon his head was a helmet of brass, he was clothed with a coat of mail that weighed five thousand shekels, and he had greaves of brass upon his legs. The coat was made of plates of brass that overlaid one another, like the scales of a fish, and they were so closely joined that no dart or arrow could possibly penetrate the armor. At his back the giant bore a huge javelin, or lance, also of brass. “The staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and one bearing a shield went before him.” – Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 646.2, Ellen G. White.

We should believe that God will do according to His Word because He is a God who cannot lie. David believed God’s Word when He said in Deuteronomy 28:7 (KJV) – “The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.” He believed that God would make them overcome all battles since God wanted them to be above only and not beneath (Deuteronomy 28:13). He knew that God wanted to set them on high above all nations of the earth (Deuteronomy 28:1).

God nurtured this strong faith in David through obedience to His commands. Faith is written on your mind when you obey God’s commands, and fear is erased. The Bible says in Proverbs 28:1 (KJV) – “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.” David was bolder than a lion, which is why he was able to kill a lion, a bear, and Goliath. Later on in his reign as King, he was able to win all battles. “Not once should we even think of failure. We are to cooperate with One who knows no failure.” – Messages to Young People, Page 309.3, Ellen G. White.

2 Chronicles 20:12 (KJV) – “O our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee.”

“Jehoshaphat was a man of courage and valor. For years he had been strengthening his armies and his fortified cities. He was well prepared to meet almost any foe; yet in this crisis he put not his trust in the arm of flesh. Not by disciplined armies and fenced cities, but by a living faith in the God of Israel, could he hope to gain the victory over these heathen who boasted of their power to humble Judah in the eyes of the nations.” – Prophets and Kings, Page 198.4, Ellen G. White.

King Jehoshaphat and the kingdom of Judah were attacked by three armies, the people of Moab, Amon, and Mt Seir. By using his eyes, King Jehoshaphat saw that the three armies outnumbered them and were more powerful than his own army. However, Jehoshaphat did not rely on what his eyes saw (his senses); he relied on God. He did not fear the three armies he could see but trusted in God, whom he could not see.

“We have little idea of the strength that would be ours if we would connect with the source of all strength. We fall into sin again and again, and think it must always be so. We cling to our infirmities as if they were something to be proud of. Christ tells us that we must set our face as a flint if we would overcome. He has borne our sins in His own body on the tree; and through the power He has given us, we may resist the world, the flesh, and the devil. Then let us not talk of our weakness and inefficiency, but of Christ and His strength. When we talk of Satan’s strength, the enemy fastens his power more firmly upon us. When we talk of the power of the Mighty One, the enemy is driven back. As we draw near to God, He draws near to us….”- Messages to Young People, Page 105.1, Ellen G. White.

Hebrews 11:27 (KJV) – “By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing Him who is invisible.”

Moses did not fear Pharaoh, whom he could see. He feared God, whom he could not see. The Israelite leader knew Pharaoh was mighty and could cause significant harm to him, but he knew that God was more powerful, and if he disobeyed Him, the harm caused by God would be far greater than what Pharaoh would do. He also knew that God had the power to deliver them from the hands of Pharaoh. He did not trust in his senses. He leaned on the one who created and sustains the senses.

John 20:29 (KJV) – “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” Jesus told this to Thomas after he insisted that he needed to touch Him so that he could believe that He rose. Christ allowed the doubting Thomas to touch Him and later told him those words. Thomas did not trust God’s Word when Jesus said, He would die and rise again after three days. The disciples, too, did not trust in God, despite seeing Jesus do all those signs and wonders. Jesus was grieved that despite walking with Him for three years, they still placed their senses above faith.

You may want to keep the Sabbath, but you don’t see how you will make enough money to cater to your needs without working on Saturday. Don’t rely on your senses; rely on God. A specific sin might have held you captive, for example, a lie that has gone too deep, and you may not know how to get out of it. You cannot see your way out of it. Ask God to free you from it. He is the way (John 14:6); He can make a way where there seems to be no way.

Use your senses but remember faith is the higher sense.
