Sin promises more, a deceptive chance,
Yet leaves us robbed of life’s true glance,
With God the Solid Rock we stand,
Without Him, we build on sinking sand.
Without faith, more is sought and less is gained,
More may be found, but none is sustained,
Doubt does nothing but leave us chained,
With truth by your side, much more is gained.
A little sleep, a little sin,
In poverty and misery, the soul shall spin,
In the words of the Bible, we ought to be keen,
Find out what God is telling us and what He really means.
For in every sin, trouble and pain is sown,
A harvest reaped, yet often unknown,
Trust in the Lord and make His truth known,
The truth will set you free and make you reborn.
Students hustle in the late-night glow,
Trading Sabbath rest for a grade to show,
Less sleeping time, more knowledge to find,
Yet good results slip like sand through time.
1 Chronicles 21:1-2 (KJV) – “1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.”
1 Chronicles 21:7 (KJV) – “And God was displeased with this thing; therefore He smote Israel.”
David took a census of his army because he thought that the more they were, the higher chances of defeating their enemies. This mode of thinking and this behavior is quite common in the present times. We tend to rely on what we have or think we have more than we rely on God.
There was little faith in Israel in the olden days, but there is still little faith among Christians today. Many have been disappointed when they lost elections after they spent so much money. They trusted in their riches to enable them to give them victory, but their wealth ended up letting them down.
Various people have started businesses with sufficient capital to run all necessary operations in a company, but the firms have failed to succeed. Many organizations have been disappointed because they thought that by hiring the best talent in the market, their organizations would be highly profitable. They get disappointed when their organizations encounter huge losses despite hiring the best talent and implementing the ‘best’ strategies.
Some music record labels and sports teams have been disappointed when the best-talented people they signed failed to deliver results. We should come to a realization that it is the hand of God that gives success in everything and not our resources.
Some students fail to keep the Sabbath so that they may have more time for their studies because they think that the more time they spend on their studies, the higher their grades will be. Some don’t keep the Sabbath because they are paid hourly rates and want to work more hours to earn more money since the more hours one works, the more one gets paid.
Unfortunately, most of them don’t get successful as they presume. God may allow them to accumulate all that money and then a calamity arises and they end up losing it all, the way He allowed the people to build the tower of Babel for a certain period of time and then turned all their work to waste. God may punish them through their children, the way He avenged David by killing the son he had bore with Uriah’s wife.
“The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.” Yet justice must be maintained. The death sentence was transferred from David to the child of his sin. Thus the king was given opportunity for repentance; while to him the suffering and death of the child, as a part of his punishment, was far more bitter than his own death could have been.” – Prophets and Kings, Page 722.2, Ellen G. White.
The end of David’s son caused a lot of bitterness to him. You never know the consequences or the punishments you will face when you commit a particular sin. Therefore, abstain from immorality. The reverse is also true; you never know what blessings will come from doing an act of righteousness. Therefore do more righteous actions.
Proverbs 3:5 – 6 (KJV) – “5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
Like many of us, David leaned on his understanding. The Bible gives no room for one’s heart not to trust in God. That is why it bids us to trust God with all our hearts. The Word of God gives no room for one to follow their way; that is why we are commanded, “In all your ways acknowledge Him.” A heart that is 99.9 percent surrendered to God leaves 0.1 percent for the Devil to play with and the Devil doesn’t want much, he is comfortable with that 0.1 percent. He looks for the slightest opportunity to enter someone’s life and conquers and devours once he has entered. Therefore, we need to be watchful always.
The Bible says in Proverbs 6:10-11 (KJV) – “10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.” The Bible says a little. Satan doesn’t want much; he wants just a little. The sin David committed of numbering Israel did not look big, it seemed minor, but it led to God punishing Israel. What Adam and Eve did to the eyes of many seemed negligible, but it led to pain and agony in all succeeding generations.
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.” “Thou hast a mighty arm; strong is Thy hand: and high is Thy right hand.” “Trust ye in the Lord forever; for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” If He is for you, who can be against you? “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.” Let us trust Him who sees the end from the beginning, and who will make all things work together for good to those that love the Lord.” -Signs of the Times, February 28, 1906, Ellen G. White.
Sin promises to give you more, but instead, it steals away from you what was already yours or was supposed to be yours. Sin has robbed many of the state of perfect health. Disobedience to God has made many people bankrupt because of bad spending habits. Sin has denied many of the privileges of peace of mind.
Sin can never give you more than you currently have, although sometimes it may appear to provide you with more. Robbers and con artists do whatever they do because they want to get more. Unfortunately, some of them get caught and spend many years in prison; hence, they don’t enjoy what they have stolen, and their freedom is deprived. Some are subjected to paying huge fines and all they had stolen is taken away. Some get problems that will cause them to spend more than everything they had, and some are robbed of peace of mind. As little is much when God is in it, much is useless when God is not in it.
Psalm 127:1 (KJV) – “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
In this fast-paced world where the allure of “more” surrounds us, grant us the wisdom to seek Your guidance above all else. Help us resist the temptation to rely solely on our own understanding, wealth, or talents. Teach us to trust in You with all our hearts and acknowledge Your presence in every aspect of our lives.
Forgive us, Lord, for the times we’ve leaned on our understanding. Please forgive us for thinking more possessions or achievements would bring success and happiness. May we surrender our desires for more and embrace the richness found in Your love, grace, and eternal strength.
Please guide us away from the pitfalls of greed, seeking more in worldly pursuits, and lead us toward a life that glorifies You in all things.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activity
Consider using a journal or a digital note-taking app for this activity. Here are some prompts to guide your reflections:
- Material Possessions: Reflect on your possessions and how you can use them to help the less privileged.
- Time Management: Consider a secular (work, school-related or leisure) commitment or activity that takes up much of your time. Prayerfully explore ways to do it effectively while spending less time on it.
- Digital Detox: Identify a time during the day when you can disconnect from screens. Note how this “less screen time” positively impacts your well-being.
- Relationships: Think about a relationship that could benefit from quality time rather than quantity. Plan a simple, meaningful activity with that person.
- Spiritual Connection: Evaluate your spiritual practices. Explore how spending less time on distractions and more time in prayer or meditation deepens your connection with God.
