2 Chronicles 20:12 (KJV) – “O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee.”
“Jehoshaphat was a man of courage and valor. For years he had been strengthening his armies and his fortified cities. He was well prepared to meet almost any foe; yet in this crisis he put not his trust in the arm of flesh. Not by disciplined armies and fenced cities, but by a living faith in the God of Israel, could he hope to gain the victory over these heathen who boasted of their power to humble Judah in the eyes of the nations.” – Prophets and Kings, Page 198.4, Ellen G. White.
“With confidence Jehoshaphat could say to the Lord, “Our eyes are upon thee.” For years he had taught the people to trust in the One who in past ages had so often interposed to save His chosen ones from utter destruction; and now, when the kingdom was in peril, Jehoshaphat did not stand alone; “all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.” Verse 13. Unitedly they fasted and prayed; unitedly they besought the Lord to put their enemies to confusion, that the name of Jehovah might be glorified.” – Prophets and Kings, Page 200.1, Ellen G. White.
King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were in a challenging situation as three armies attacked them. The people of Moab, Ammon, and Mount Seir. It is hard to fight one army. Now, three troops came to attack them. I like to paint a modern picture that the army of the United States, Israel, and Russia are teaming up to attack a third-world country. By their physical might, they stood no chance. The people of Judah were in a state of confusion. They did not know what to do. The only thing they could do was fix their eyes on Jesus. The tragedy before them seemed significant in that they did not just pray; instead, they prayed and fasted. Fasting is essential.
When Jesus cast out a demon, His disciples asked Him why they could not cast it out. Jesus answered them in Matthew 17:21 (KJV) – “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Some demons can’t be driven out just by prayer alone because the disciples had prayed. They need to be driven out by prayer and fasting. Likewise, there are some situations that one cannot overcome by prayer alone. You need to overcome them through prayer and fasting. One of the things that hinder people from fasting is health conditions. Pastor Elizabeth Mokoro says that one day she had ulcers, a health condition that is not conducive for one to fast. She said, with faith, she decided to have a three-day fast, and the ulcers left her completely ever since she fasted.
After King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah fasted, a servant of God was sent to them who told them in 2 Chronicles 20:15 (KJV) – “Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” As a faithful child of God, the battles you face and the demanding situations are not yours to handle. It is God’s primal work to handle them. We have been gifted with various talents and abilities, but we face situations beyond our skills and abilities. You have been doing your best, but a problem arises where you can do nothing. You need not despair and lose hope. Look up to God because the battle is not yours but God’s.
2 Chronicles 20:21-24 (KJV) – “21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for His mercy endureth forever. 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.”
“It was a singular way of going to battle against the enemy’s army—praising the Lord with singing, and exalting the God of Israel. This was their battle song. They possessed the beauty of holiness. If more praising of God were engaged in now, hope and courage and faith would steadily increase. And would not this strengthen the hands of the valiant soldiers who today are standing in defense of truth?” – Prophets and Kings, 202.1, Ellen G. White.
“God was the strength of Judah in this crisis, and He is the strength of His people today. We are not to trust in princes, or to set men in the place of God. We are to remember that human beings are fallible and erring, and that He who has all power is our strong tower of defense. In every emergency we are to feel that the battle is His. His resources are limitless, and apparent impossibilities will make the victory all the greater.” – Prophets and Kings, Page 202.4, Ellen G. White.
God commanded them through His servant to sing songs of Praises to Him. Before Jesus changed water to wine, John 2:5 (KJV) says – “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.” Whatever God tells you to do, do it. Don’t try to figure out if it makes sense or not. Just do it. The only logic we can comprehend is from the knowledge we have. However, the knowledge we don’t have is more than the knowledge we have. We are but tiny infinite beings in a vast universe. Most things we can be sure we know are the things within our surroundings.
Our surroundings and the places we have visited are just a tiny fraction of the world. You may have visited all countries, but you have not been to each neighborhood. You have not entered every house on earth or interacted with every single person in the world. If your knowledge of the physical world is that limited, what about the spiritual world? That is why we are constantly learning, and the best way to learn is by obeying God. Therefore, you cannot dismiss God’s commands because they seem not to make sense.
From the outlook, appointing a choir to sing when three armies are coming to attack you does not make sense. Judah’s people were fortunate to obey this command because many professed followers of Christ would have dismissed it. After all, it does not seem to make sense. Many of us have missed out on numerous God’s blessings because what God has told us to do, does not make sense to our finite minds.
The three armies that were against Judah came to battle them. They were well organized with powerful military equipment and were more than sure they would destroy them. They were probably talking about their plans after they finished the battle. When the people of Judah joyfully sang praises to God, the three armies got confused and started killing each other. They destroyed each other, and none was left.
Singing songs of praise alone brought down three mighty armies in the world. Looking at this example, it is crystal clear that there is no time wasted when we pray, study the Bible, participate in fellowships, sing, or do anything for God. The more time you spend with God, the more powerful you become because you are uniting with infinite power. God can do much for you when you trust and depend on Him. When you don’t know what to do, do what you know, and what you know as a Christian is trusting in God. 2 Chronicles 20:20 (KJV) – “Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe His prophets, so shall ye prosper.”
“Laden with spoil, the armies of Judah returned “with joy; for the Lord had made them to rejoice over their enemies. And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 20:27, 28. Great was their cause for rejoicing. In obedience to the command, “Stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord: … fear not, nor be dismayed,” they had put their trust wholly in God, and He had proved to be their fortress and their deliverer. Verse 17. Now they could sing with understanding the inspired hymns of David:” – Prophets and Kings, Page 203.1, Ellen G. White.
1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV) –“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” God is not an author of confusion, so he does not want you to be confused. Confusion comes from the Devil, and it is a result of a lack of faith and disobedience. God expects us to look up to Him, the source of knowledge and all wisdom, so we don’t get confused.
If the people of Judah had disobeyed God, they would have been confused about what to do. They would look at the three armies, trying hard to find a solution to defeat them while the answer was within their reach. When facing a challenging situation in your company or seeking growth for your business, you seek experienced consultants. You seek them because they have experience in the field and have probably faced similar situations like you. If you know this, why don’t you seek God when facing life challenges? Because He is the most experienced consultant you can ever encounter. He was there before the beginning, and He created all things. He understands you more than you understand yourself, or anyone else understands you.
Exodus 14:10-14 (NKJV) – “10 And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.” 13 And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
After the Israelites left Egypt, Pharaoh and the Egyptians pursued them. The Egyptians were mightier than the Israelites, with the best military equipment at that time. The Israelites were afraid because they did not know what to do. They knew that they were too weak to defeat the Egyptians physically. They also knew that they had no organized army like the Egyptians. They thought their fate had already been decided because the Egyptians were close to capturing them. Not only were they frightened, but they were also confused.
At that moment of confusion, Moses gave them a word of encouragement by assuring them that they would no longer see the Egyptians who were oppressing them, for the Lord would fight for them. Probably in their reasoning, they thought that Moses was crazy. They might have asked within themselves how God would fight for them, and they couldn’t see Him.
God is a God who does things in mysterious ways. He is full of unique miracles. He parted the red sea, and the Israelites were able to cross. After they crossed, the Egyptians tried to copy them by crossing the sea, but God brought back the waters together, and they drowned (Hebrews 11:29). We serve a mighty God willing to work wonders after wonders if we have faith in Him.
“As morning broke it revealed to the multitudes of Israel all that remained of their mighty foes—the mail-clad bodies cast upon the shore. From the most terrible peril, one night had brought complete deliverance. That vast, helpless throng—bondmen unused to battle, women, children, and cattle, with the sea before them, and the mighty armies of Egypt pressing behind—had seen their path opened through the waters and their enemies overwhelmed in the moment of expected triumph. Jehovah alone had brought them deliverance, and to Him their hearts were turned in gratitude and faith. Their emotion found utterance in songs of praise. The Spirit of God rested upon Moses, and he led the people in a triumphant anthem of thanksgiving, the earliest and one of the most sublime that are known to man.” – Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 287.5, Ellen G. White.
2 Kings 4:1 (NKJV) – “A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”
The woman left as a widow by her husband, who was the provider and leader of the home, was in a situation that seemed helpless. After her husband died, she started facing various problems, like a creditor coming to take her two sons to be his slaves. She went to the man of God, Elisha, to seek help, comfort, or both. She had no clue about what to do because she would not have sought Elisha’s help if she knew what to do. Luckily, she chose wisely by seeking assistance from God’s genuine prophet. It is good to approach genuine people of God whenever we have a problem. Reading books from authentic men and women of God like Ellen G. White is also suitable for finding solutions to various issues. However, we must ensure that whatever advice they give aligns with the Bible (Truth).
First, Elisha asked her what she had in her house. She said that the only thing she had was a jar of oil. Elisha told her to go and borrow empty vessels from her neighbors. He told her to borrow as many as she could. The King James Version says, “borrow not a few” (2 Kings 4:3). When God has shown you your purpose, do as much as possible when working on your vision or calling. Don’t limit yourself.
If you are a poet, write as many poems as you can. If you are a musician, write and sing as many songs as possible. Learn various instruments and develop different musical skills. Always try to stretch yourself beyond your limit, and you will always achieve new levels of excellence. After borrowing, she was required to fill the jars with oil. God’s miracle was increasing that oil to fill all the empty vessels.
The widow did exactly as Elisha had told her. Afterward, Elisha told her to sell the oil, pay her debt, and live on the rest. That solution was simple, and it was within the widow’s ability. A certain lady gave me this testimony. She told me that she was out of work during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many to lose their jobs and it also caused many salary reductions. At her home, bills were accumulating. Her clothes business was going down and no clothes were sold for two months. A friend approached her and gave her the idea of selling uji power (porridge). They started at a small scale hoping to sell twenty cups in a day. To their surprise, they sold out on one day with ingredients that were supposed to be for the following week. They did that business from the year 2020 to the year 2022. As a result, she was able to take care of the bills in her home and to take care of a few friends as well. That was a simple solution that solved a problem that seemed big.
Sometimes you may not know that you have a particular ability or talent till God puts you in a situation that will make you use that ability and talent. Probably the woman had sold no oil at all. Probably she was not a businesswoman because if she were, she would have asked Elisha to help her business to flourish. She probably realized that she could sell oil when Elisha, the man of God, gave her that task.
John 6:5-6 (KJV) – “5 When Jesus then lifted up His eyes, and saw a great company come unto Him, He saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? 6 And this He said to prove him: for He Himself knew what He would do.”
Jesus asked Philip this question to test him. Deep inside, He knew that Phillip had no reliable solution. He knew Philip and His other disciples were confused, and they did not know what to do. However, Him being God, who never lacks solutions, knew what He would do in that situation.
Jesus took two fish and five loaves of bread and fed over 5,000 people. This was a miracle from God. It was impossible to do such a thing by man, but God multiplied the little food that it fed the multitude to their satisfaction. Beyond that, twelve baskets remained.
You might have an exam scheduled on the Sabbath day, and the lecturer has refused to change the dates. Seek God, for he knows what He will do. In university, when choosing courses/units, I avoided choosing Saturday classes, so I would choose alternative courses from the various lecturers that fell on the other days. A time came when I had to choose a course/unit which had only one professor teaching it, and it was being trained on Saturday. I prayed about it, and to my surprise, the class was rescheduled from Saturday to a weekday.
In his book, “When God Says Remember,” Pastor Mark Finley talks about a professor who refused to have his student Jonathan sit for an exam on another day as the exam was scheduled for Saturday. Jonathan prayed about it, and he went to church while the students did the exam on Saturday. After the exam, as the professor was walking home with the students’ exams in his briefcase, he was robbed. His exam-filled briefcase was taken away. Since graduation was only a few days away, the school’s principal announced that each student would get a passing mark on the exam. Their total score was to be for the test averages of the previous tests they had done.
God had answered Jonathan’s prayer in a miraculous way. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 2:30 (KJV) – “For them that honour Me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” In one of his sermons, Pastor Mark gives another story of students in Brazil whose university refused them to sit for an exam on another day besides Saturday. He says that the students approached a certain Adventist billionaire who decided to buy the university. After purchasing the university, he fired the administration, and they were finally allowed to keep the Sabbath.
God wants you to look to Him in whatever situation you are facing. He is willing to help you through the most demanding situations as well as the simple situations. If you depend on Him, He will do great miracles that display His endless power. We need to realize our helpless state and cling to the one with boundless solutions. Therefore, whatever terrible situation you are facing, whether it is poverty, rejection, addiction, opposition, or any other problem and you don’t know what to do, look to God to give you a solution.
Psalm 121:3 (KJV) – “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber.”
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Dear God. I don’t know what to do. Please show me what to do. In Jesus name, Amen.
Activity
Step 1: Write It Down
In a quiet space, take a notebook or journal and write:
- A brief description of what you’re currently facing that leaves you uncertain or overwhelmed.
- Underneath it, write this phrase in bold or capital letters:
“My eyes are upon Thee.” – 2 Chronicles 20:12
Step 2: Pray Aloud
Kneel or sit, and talk to God about the situation. Be honest. Tell Him you don’t know what to do. End your prayer by declaring trust in Him.
Example: “Lord, like Jehoshaphat, I don’t know what to do but my eyes are on You. Lead me. Strengthen me. The battle is Yours.”
Step 3: Sing a Song of Praise (5–10 mins)
Choose a worship song or hymn that reminds you of God’s power and faithfulness (e.g., “Way Maker,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” or “It Is Well With My Soul”). Sing it out loud—even if you’re alone.
Jehoshaphat’s army sang before the battle and God moved.
Optional Bonus: Try a Mini-Fast
Skip one meal (e.g., breakfast or lunch) and use that time to pray instead. Dedicate your hunger to God as a reminder that your help comes from Him, not from earthly strength.
