HIDING FROM THE ONLY SOURCE

KEY TEXT: Genesis 3:8 (KJV) – “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.”

Adam and Eve heard God walking in the garden, and they hid. People usually hide from something or someone harmful.

Is God harmful?

Below are some of the attributes of God:

God is the Creator

Genesis 1:1 (KJV) – “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” John 1:3 (KJV) – “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made.” Psalm 33:6 (KJV) – “By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”

God is the Creator of everything, including us. He understands us more than we understand ourselves. He not only knows what we do but He also knows what we can do if presented with an opportunity. Adam and Eve tried to hide from the only source that they were dependent on. They tried to hide from a God who could see where they were. It is like a vehicle built with a tracker by the manufacturer, trying to hide away from the manufacturer.

The same applies to us when we constantly try to hide from God. We forget that God has the whole world in His hands, and hiding from Him is hiding from life since God is life (John 14:6). We hide from God when we try to follow all other counsels besides God’s. We forget that it is God who gave life to those men and women sharing the wrong advice. We forget that God gave them the ability to communicate and function even though they abuse and misuse their powers.

God Owns Everything

Psalm 24:1 (KJV) – “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” God owns everything. How can we hide away from a God who owns us?

”That this earth belongs to the Lord, no one will for a moment call in question. It is His, because He is the Creator. Says the psalmist: “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For He hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.” Psalm 24:1, 2. When the prophet Daniel interpreted to King Nebuchadnezzar the dream which foretold his abasement, he told the king that he should be driven out from his kingdom, “till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will.” Daniel 4:25. And in Psalm 115:16, we read: “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s; but the earth hath He given to the children of men.” – Prophetic Lights, Page 138.1, Ellen G. White.

God is Omnipotent

God has infinitely more power than we do. Hebrews 11:3 (KJV) – “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

No created being (including angels and humans) can make something without using raw materials. God is a God who created everything by His Word without the need for raw materials. In fact, He is the One who created raw materials. That alone should show us how powerful God is.

Secondly, Peter raised the dead just like Jesus did. Paul too raised the dead. Both Paul and Peter are dead now because they could not resurrect themselves, but Jesus raised Himself because He is God. God’s power is beyond our knowledge and comprehension. It is beyond these two examples that I have given. God is all-powerful. We cannot outrun Him, and we cannot hide from Him. We cannot fight Him; when we attempt to do so, we lose.

God is Omnipresent

Psalm 139:7-10 (KJV) – “7 Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from Thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me.”

God is everywhere. Hiding from a God who is everywhere is foolishness. We stay at home and fail to go to church, thinking that God is only found in the church. To our surprise, God meets us at our hiding place like He met Adam and Eve. One can fail to attend church because the environment is uninteresting and decide to go to a mall or any other hang-out place to have fun. God, with His love, may send someone to them while they are in that place, and they end up getting saved.

Pastor Anthony Mwangi, commonly known as Pastor T, gave a particular testimony relating to this phenomenon. He said that there was a time He went to a club to drink and met a prostitute who asked him, “What is a handsome young boy like you doing in such a place?” And immediately, he discerned that it was the voice of God talking to him through that prostitute, telling him to get out of that environment.

I never liked going to church. On Saturdays, I used to prefer staying at home to sleep after a long tiresome week. One day while I was in the house in 2016, I bumped into Christian YouTube video sermons, and that is how my spiritual growth began. In 2020, I started studying the Bible independently and doing a lot of deep research. Still in 2020, I started posting Christian content on social media. In 2021, I started memorizing Bible verses. In 2022, I started attending church consistently and serving in various roles. In 2025, I published my first book and other books as well. God is everywhere. You cannot run away from Him.

God is Omniscient

1 Corinthians 1:25 (KJV) – “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” Proverbs 1:7 (KJV) – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

God is all-knowing. He knows everything. His knowledge stretches from everlasting to everlasting. His knowledge and wisdom have no beginning or end. How can we run away from a God who knows where we are?

God is Good

Psalm 100:5 (KJV) – “For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.” We run away from a good God and go towards the other side (The Devil’s side). We run away from God, who has an immeasurable supply of all good things, and go to the Devil, who is the father of scarcity since his work is to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10).

We fail to attend church and fellowship services but never miss out on entertainment joints. We run away from Bible study, which is meant to enrich us. Therefore, our spiritual lives (which control the physical life) disintegrate, and things in the physical realm start falling apart. As fun as they may seem, pubs and night clubs rob us of our physical health, judgment, morality, etc. We constantly dive into the sea of trouble and pain by running away from God.

“Thus through faith they will come to know God by an experimental knowledge. They have proved for themselves the reality of His Word, the truth of His promises. They have tasted, and they know that the Lord is good. The beloved John had a knowledge gained through his own experience…. So everyone may be able, through his own experience, to “set his seal to this, that God is true.” He can bear witness to that which he himself has seen and heard and felt of the power of Christ. He can testify:—”I needed help, and I found it in Jesus. Every want was supplied, the hunger of my soul was satisfied; the Bible is to me the revelation of Christ. I believe in Jesus because He is to me a divine Saviour. I believe the Bible because I have found it to be the voice of God to my soul.”- With God at Dawn, Page 21, Ellen G. White.

God is Love

1 John 4:8 (KJV) – “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

The Bible does not say that God has love. Instead, it says God is love. When you have something, you can give it away, but when you are something, there is nothing you can do about it. God is love. Everything that God does, He does out of love for everyone. Even when He punishes us or allows us to face affliction, He does it out of love.

God allowed Jesus (His only begotten Son) to die on the cross. He did not allow that because He hated Him. He allowed that because He loved Him, and He loved all of us as well. While often misunderstood, God is fair to everyone. He has given everybody a gift that, if rightfully used, will result in the greatness of that individual.

God desires everyone to be great, but through our ungratefulness, we fail to reach the heights He intends us to by not using our gifts. We run away from a loving God and approach the Devil, who has nothing good to offer besides death. Romans 6:23 (KJV) – “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” How can we run away from such a good God who intends to give us every good thing? Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) – “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

“Every manifestation of creative power is an expression of infinite love. The sovereignty of God involves fullness of blessing to all created beings.” – Mind Character and Personality, Volume 1, Page 247.2, Ellen G. White.

“The history of the great conflict between good and evil, from the time it first began in heaven to the final overthrow of rebellion and the total eradication of sin, is also a demonstration of God’s unchanging love.” — Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 33, Ellen G. White.

“God’s Love Demonstrated in Nature—Nature and revelation alike testify of God’s love. Our Father in heaven is the source of life, of wisdom, and of joy. Look at the wonderful and beautiful things of nature. Think of their marvelous adaptation to the needs and happiness, not only of man but of all living creatures. The sunshine and the rain, that gladden and refresh the earth, the hills and seas and plains, all speak to us of the Creator’s love. It is God who supplies the daily needs of all His creatures.” – Mind Character and Personality, Volume 1, Page 247.2, Ellen G. White.

“God is love” is written upon every opening bud, upon every spire of springing grass. The lovely birds making the air vocal with their happy songs, the delicately tinted flowers in their perfection perfuming the air, the lofty trees of the forest with their rich foliage of living green—all testify to the tender, fatherly care of our God and to His desire to make His children happy.” — Steps to Christ, 9, 10 (1892), Ellen G. White.

God is Merciful

Micah 7:18 (KJV) – “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retaineth not His anger forever, because He delighteth in mercy.”

God finds joy in forgiving us. We run away from a merciful God and go to Satan, who entertains no mercy. God is extremely good that even when we sin, He is merciful. We can attest to this when we encounter incidences where He constantly prevents us from the harm that may come to us when we are on the enemy’s side. Many robbers are in prison because God saved them from getting killed through mob justice. Many criminals have not yet been caught. Sin hurts God, but He puts mercy above His wrath. Innumerable times we insult God and mock Him, but He still loves us because of the abundant mercy He possesses for us.

“God is Himself the source of all mercy. His name is “merciful and gracious.” Exodus 34:6. He does not treat us according to our desert. He does not ask if we are worthy of His love, but He pours upon us the riches of His love, to make us worthy. He is not vindictive. He seeks not to punish, but to redeem. Even the severity which He manifests through His providences is manifested for the salvation of the wayward. He yearns with intense desire to relieve the woes of men and to apply His balsam to their wounds. It is true that God “will by no means clear the guilty” (Exodus 34:7), but He would take away the guilt.” – Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, Page 22.1, Ellen G. White.

God is Gracious

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (KJV) – “9 And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”

Romans 5:20-21 (KJV) – “20 Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God has grace in abundance. The supply of the grace of God is overflowing to every individual. This grace will enable us to live righteous lives. This grace enables us to access God’s blessings, but we hide from God’s grace when we hide from God.

Titus 2:11 (KJV) – “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.”

“By disobeying the commands of God, man fell under the condemnation of His law. This fall called for the grace of God to appear in behalf of sinners. We should never have learned the meaning of this word “grace” had we not fallen. God loves the sinless angels, who do His service, and are obedient to all His commands; but He does not give them grace. These heavenly beings know naught of grace; they have never needed it; for they have never sinned. Grace is an attribute of God shown to undeserving human beings. We did not seek after it, but it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to bestow this grace upon everyone who hungers for it. To everyone He presents terms of mercy, not because we are worthy, but because we are so utterly unworthy. Our need is the qualification which gives us the assurance that we shall receive this gift.” – God’s Amazing Grace, Page 10.2, Ellen G. White.

God is Generous

James 1:5 (AMP) – “If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him.”

God will give everyone all spiritual gifts and fruits generously, not just wisdom. He is willing to provide them to us because He has them in abundance and can never run short of supply. Therefore, if you need wisdom, ask God, and He will give you.

After giving you, He may present you with situations requiring you to portray wisdom to prove that He has already given you. If you need a good memory, ask God. If you need more understanding, ask God. If you need patience, ask God. Every good spiritual gift and fruit you need or want, ask God. He will give it to you liberally. There is a false belief that you must be born gifted to possess that gift.

For example, some people believe that to be a leader; you ought to be born with leadership ability. Some believe that for you to have a particular gift, your parents must have it. There are indeed people who are born with certain abilities, and, indeed, genetics sometimes plays a significant role in a person’s behavior. However, God can go beyond the rules of science since He is the Creator of all science. The Bible says in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom,” meaning it is something the person did not initially have. It means that it is something that he was not born with. The verse says, “Let him ask of God” because only God can give you an excellent spiritual gift you never had.

Ephesians 3:20 (KJV) – “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” God is extremely generous. He can do for you beyond what you request Him to. We must cultivate a habit of praying big prayers because we are praying to an almighty God. For example, instead of praying for ten visitors to visit your church every Saturday, you can pray to have one thousand visitors every Saturday. This is because you are approaching the God of the universe who knows no impossibilities.

Do not limit God. The book Dare to Ask for More by Melody Mason, pages 19-20, discusses King Alexander the Great. It says, “Besides being a great conqueror, he was also a compassionate ruler. Every year, he set aside one day that he called “compassionate day.” As the story goes, on this special day of the year, he randomly selected people across his kingdom to come and make special requests. They could ask for whatever they wanted or needed. And he would grant their requests. Most people asked for food, clothes, money for medicine, and so on. However, one year, there was a man who dared to ask for more! Speaking through the king’s spokesman, this man shared his request.

“Can you please tell the king that I want a large palace? And I want . . .” But before he could continue, the king’s spokesman interrupted him with irritation. “What impertinence! Don’t you see all these people asking for food and medicine? How dare you to think that you can ask the king for a palace!” But the man continued earnestly, “I want the palace to include a large banquet hall where I can host a celebration, because I have lots of friends. And I want the palace to be well furnished, and I want a special meal prepared.”

But the spokesman stopped him again, as he was getting more angry. “I will not ask the king for this! This is the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard!” At this point, King Alexander saw the commotion. “What does the man desire?” he inquired of his spokesman. The spokesman reluctantly turned toward the king and came forward, whispering in low tones that only the king could hear. “King, I’m afraid to tell you this. I can’t believe how unreasonable this man is, and I know you will be upset. But he’s asking for a palace. Not only does he have the audacity to ask for a palace, but he’s asking that you’d make a large banquet hall in this palace, because he evidently has lots of friends. And he wants the whole thing to be fully furnished and supplied with food. I’m so sorry. I know this is such an unreasonable request, and I tried to get him to ask for something more reasonable, but he persisted.”

King Alexander paused for a moment, then with a large smile on his face, he turned toward the petitioner and enthusiastically replied, “Request granted!” The spokesman looked at the king in astonishment. “How can you grant such an outrageous request?” he asked in shock. The king replied, smiling, “You see, all these people are asking for food, for medicine, and for mundane things. They think that’s the only thing I can give. But they don’t need a king to give them these things. Anyone with extra resources could do these things for them. But this man . . . THIS MAN . . . He’s the first man that’s really made me feel like the king I am. For only I can grant such a request! ”

That man knew how great and wealthy Alexander the Great was, so he dared to ask for more. Alexander is now dead because he was a mere mortal like us. He was a great conqueror but was not all-powerful because the Romans conquered his kingdom. He had great wealth in man’s eyes, but his resources were limited. He was only able to give people material goods but not spiritual gifts.

God is immortal. All life flows from God. Therefore, God can increase your lifespan like He increased Hezekiah’s. God is all-powerful. If He is for us, no one can be against us. God possesses infinite wealth because He can create. God is not only able to give material gifts but also spiritual gifts. King Solomon and Alexander were wealthy, but their wealth was finite because they could not create. If we understand God like that, we will not pray small prayers.

2 Samuel 12:7-8 (AMP) – “7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you as king over Israel, and I spared you from the hand of Saul. 8 I also gave you your master’s house, and put your master’s wives into your care and under your protection, and I gave you the house (royal dynasty) of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have given you much more!”

God gave David wealth, the highest position in the land, spared him from Saul’s hand, gave him his master’s house, and put his wives under his care and protection. God says that if David had seen all that to be too little, He would have given him much more than that. Many Christian preachers and teachers portray a Christian life to be that which is content with mediocrity and low ambition.

“Remember that you will never reach a higher standard than you yourself set. Then set your mark high, and step by step, even though it be by painful effort, by self-denial and sacrifice, ascend the whole length of the ladder [p. 332] of progress. Let nothing hinder you. Fate has not woven its meshes about any human being so firmly that he needs remain helpless and in uncertainty. Opposing circumstances should create a firm determination to overcome them. The breaking down of one barrier will give greater ability and courage to go forward. Press with determination in the right direction, and circumstances will be your helpers, not your hindrances.

Be ambitious, for the Master’s glory, to cultivate every grace of character. In every phase of your character building you are to please God. This you may do; for Enoch pleased Him though living in a degenerate age. And there are Enochs in this our day.” – Christ Object Lessons, Page 332, Ellen G. White.

“We cannot tell the ambitious man that he must cease to be ambitious if he would become a Christian. God places before him the highest objects of ambition—a spotless white robe, a crown studded with jewels, a scepter, a throne of glory and honor that is as enduring as the throne of Jehovah. All the elements of character which help to make him successful and honored in the world—the irrepressible desire for some greater good, the indomitable will, the strenuous exertion, the untiring perseverance—are not to be crushed out. These are to remain, and through the grace of God received into the heart to be turned into another channel. These valuable traits of character may be exercised on objects as much higher and nobler than worldly pursuits as the heavens are higher than the earth.

Jesus presents a white robe, a crown of glory richer than any that ever decked the brow of a monarch, and titles above those of honored princes. The recompense for a life devoted to the service of Christ exceeds anything that the human imagination can grasp. Christ does not call upon men to lay aside their zeal, their desires for excellence and elevation, but He would have them seek, not for perishable treasure or fleeting honor, but for that which is enduring.” – That I May Know Him, Page 91, Ellen G. White.

Deuteronomy 28:13 says, we shall be the head and not the tail. It emphasizes this by saying that we shall be above only and not beneath. The walls of heaven are made of jasper. The gates are made of pearls, and the streets are of gold. All these are highly expensive and rare commodities in this world. Ellen G. White writes that heaven is more glorious than we can imagine. The Bible says in James 4:2 (KJV) says, “Ye have not, because ye ask not.” God is willing to give us so much, but we do not ask Him in terms of spiritual and material gifts. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 2:8-9 that Christ was made poor so that we can be rich. It is the most unreasonable thing to do to run away from such a generous God.

Genesis 2:16-17 (KJV) – “16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it.” God created thousands of tree species and allowed man to eat from all except one. If God were mean, He would have given man one tree and taken the rest because He is the one who created them. However, He gave man all trees and preserved one. Man’s greed made him go beyond his limits and eat that one tree that God had told them not to.

Exodus 20:8-11 (KJV) – “8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

In His generosity, God has given us six days to do all our work but has preserved one day for Himself. However, we still rob Him of that one day.

Leviticus 27:30 (AMP) – “And all the tithe (tenth part) of the land, whether the seed of the land or the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.” God is generous because He only requires us to return Him ten percent of all our increase. If He were selfish, He would have asked for ninety percent or one hundred since all resources belong to Him, and He is the one who has given them to us.

Having established all that, we can see that we rob ourselves when we hide from God, the only source.

Adam and Eve used God’s creation (the trees) to hide—the same thing to us. We use God’s creation to hide from Him and to go against Him. God has given people the ability and freedom to acquire knowledge and teach, but they use it to teach that there is no God.

Genesis 3:1, the Devil used the serpent that the Lord God had made. The Devil has no power to create his things. Instead, he uses the best that God has made. A certain social media influencer did an Instagram story series about witchcraft. He asked people (his audience/followers) to send him messages about what they knew about witchcraft or their experiences with it. One lady said she used to be in a relationship with a certain ‘powerful’ wizard in the Kenyan Coastal region. That wizard used to be visited by high-profile government officials, such as governors, cabinet ministers, etc. One day a certain governor came and left behind a massive amount of money. After he left, the wizard told his girlfriend, “These people are coming to me instead of believing in God. Let them keep on coming so that we can make money and live a good life.” The wizard might have had real powers, but he acknowledged that God’s power is more potent than his (the Devil’s). In the time of Moses, the magicians and wizards performed an absolute miracle by making their rods turn to snakes (many snakes), but Moses’ snake (one snake) ate all of them. The Egyptian magicians could do the first two plagues (the plague of water turning to blood and the plague of frogs) just like Moses. However, they could not do the subsequent plagues, from the plague of gnats to the death of the firstborns in Egypt.

Those who visit witchdoctors, those who join cults, and those who spend time reading books such as the Law of Attraction (whose central theme is the universe giving you what you want) are wasting a lot of time and resources seeking the unprofitable or average while they have the opportunity to get the best which is found in God’s word.

“The mental value of Bible study consists not only in searching out truth and bringing it together, it consists also in the effort required to grasp the themes presented. The mind that is occupied only with commonplace matters becomes dwarfed and enfeebled. If never tasked to comprehend grand and far-reaching truths, it loses the power of growth. As a safeguard against this degeneracy and a stimulus to development, nothing can equal the study of God’s Word. As a means of intellectual training, the Bible is more effective than any other book or all other books combined. No other study can impart such mental power as does the effort to grasp the stupendous truths of revelation. The mind thus brought into contact with the thoughts of the Infinite will expand and strengthen.” – True Education, Page 74.2, Ellen G. White.

King Nebuchadnezzar used chosen men of God to advance his kingdom. The men were Daniel, Hananiah (Shadrach), Mishael (Meshach), and Azariah (Abednego). Nebuchadnezzar had to use foreigners because there were no such people as Daniel and his four friends in the land of the Chaldeans. Pharaoh had to use Joseph (a prisoner) to interpret for him the dream because, among the noblest and most powerful magicians and wizards, none could interpret his dream. In other words, Satan has nothing to offer. Psalm 91:7 (KJV) – “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.” A thousand was the largest unit in Hebrew. As the Bible shows, all huge numbers are placed in thousands. For example, the billions or trillions of angels are numbered as “ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands (Revelation 5:11)” Jewish Rabbi Daniel Lapin says that if something is not found in the Hebrew language, that thing does not exist. In my own opinion (not sure though), I think we may have gotten the system of placing a comma after every thousand in a number (such as 1,000 or 1,000,000, or 1,000,000,000 or 1,000,000,000,000) through that ancient Hebrew numeric system of one thousand being the largest number unit. Having established this, let us try to reread Psalm 91:7. In other words, what that verse means is one genuine man of God is more potent than billions of heathen people.

God wants to give us all these good things beyond what we can imagine. Let us not hide from Him.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for being all that You are. Please help me not to hide from you anymore for you are my only source. Hide me from all evil. In Jesus name, Amen.

Activity

  • Read Genesis 3:8 aloud slowly:
  • “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God…”
  • Stand in front of the mirror and look into your own eyes.
  • Ask yourself honestly (aloud or in your heart):
“Where am I hiding from God?”
(Examples: Fear, shame, stubborn habits, entertainment, bad advice, self-sufficiency.)
  • Write down one area where you’ve been “hiding” or resisting God. Be honest but gentle with yourself.
  • Now flip the paper over and write this sentence:

“God sees me, knows me, and still wants me. I choose to come out of hiding today.”
