KEY TEXT: John 1:1 (KJV) – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
God and His Word are One
God and His Word are one. God’s Word is not just a part of Him, but God’s Word is God Himself. This means that you cannot separate God from His Word. Therefore, when we look at all the attributes mentioned in the Bible that God possesses, we can conclude that God’s Word has those attributes.
1 John 4:7-8 (KJV) – “7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
The Bible says that God is love. Therefore, if God is love and God and His Word are one, it means that His Word is love.
1 Corinthians 13 describes various attributes of love.
God’s Word is Patient
1 Corinthians 13:4 (NKJV) – “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up.”
1 Corinthians 13:4 tells us that love is long-suffering, or rather love is patient. This means that God’s Word possesses patience. Not only does it possess patience, but it can make the impatient person patient. God’s Word spoke of salvation after man sinned in Genesis 3:15. However, Jesus Christ did not come immediately after man sinned. He came around four thousand years later. God hates sin, and sin grieves God, but He has not destroyed the world immediately because He possesses patience. The patience He has is a result of His love and is meant to allow more people to be saved before Christ returns.
God’s Word is Kind
The Bible also tells us that love is kind. Kind means to have a friendly, generous and considerate nature. God’s word is gracious. It is selfless. It is never selfish. God’s word always benefits.
Isaiah 55:10-11 (KJV) – “10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
God’s Word never goes back to Him void. It blesses the heart which humbly receives it. God’s Word always seeks to bless the recipient.”
God’s Word is considerate. Being considerate means being careful not to inconvenience or harm others. God’s Word cannot inconvenience or hurt you. Instead, it will make life more accommodating or convenient for you. When you are in pain, God’s Word will always comfort you. It will always give you peace and happiness in your heart. Great joy is hidden in the pages of the Bible. When one studies and obeys God’s Word, happiness is the result. A person who trusts in God fully, will rejoice in the Lord always, even when facing the toughest situation.
Due to our human nature, we may sometimes be sad, but the sadness won’t overcome us like it may overcome the heathen. One who does not believe in God may resolve to alcohol and drugs, hoping they will take away the problems they are facing. Only to realize that they have increased their problems instead of reducing them. Others may take their concerns to friends, counsellors and therapists. However, no matter how experienced these people are, they cannot solve all problems because their power and knowledge are limited. The power in the Word of God is not limited. The Word of God also created knowledge. Thus, the Word of God has solutions to all problems.
God’s Word is not Envious
1 Corinthians 13:4 tells us that love is not envious. Therefore, God’s Word is not envious. Jealous motives can drive a human being’s word. Someone can give you advice out of envy. They may provide you with advice that will lead you to destruction because they fear you will succeed if you follow the right path.
God’s Word is not against your success. Instead, it wants you to prosper. Many times people steal from people because of envy. Murder is often committed as a result of jealousy. The Devil steals, kills and destroys (John 10:10) because He is envious and does not want us to inherit eternal life. God’s Word cannot steal from you. God’s Word can neither destroy what you possess nor kill you because it is not jealous. Instead, it will add to you what you did not originally possess because it has the power to create.
God’s Word can give you confidence if you lack confidence. If you lack self-control, God’s Word can provide you with self-control. It can also give one patience, peace, love, joy, faith, gentleness and kindness. God’s Word can give you tremendous management and leadership skills that are unfound in the best management schools in the world. God’s Word can make one more intelligent than they are. It can boost their memory and their reasoning ability.
“And not alone in searching out truth and bringing it together does the mental value of Bible study consist. It consists also in the effort required to grasp the themes presented. The mind occupied with commonplace matters only, becomes dwarfed and enfeebled. If never tasked to comprehend grand and far-reaching truths, it after a time loses the power of growth. As a safeguard against this degeneracy, and a stimulus to development, nothing else can equal the study of God’s word. As a means of intellectual training, the Bible is more effective than any other book, or all other books combined. The greatness of its themes, the dignified simplicity of its utterances, the beauty of its imagery, quicken and uplift the thoughts as nothing else can. No other study can impart such mental power as does the effort to grasp the stupendous truths of revelation. The mind thus brought in contact with the thoughts of the Infinite cannot but expand and strengthen.” – Education, Page 124, Ellen G. White.
“In its wide range of style and subjects the Bible has something to interest every mind and appeal to every heart. In its pages are found history the most ancient; biography the truest to life; principles of government for the control of the state, for the regulation of the household—principles that human wisdom has never equaled. It contains philosophy the most profound, poetry the sweetest and the most sublime, the most impassioned and the most pathetic. Immeasurably superior in value to the productions of any human author are the Bible writings, even when thus considered; but of infinitely wider scope, of infinitely greater value, are they when viewed in their relation to the grand central thought. Viewed in the light of this thought, every topic has a new significance. In the most simply stated truths are involved principles that are as high as Heaven and that compass eternity.” – Education, Page 125, Ellen G. White.
God’s Word can make you obey the commandments you find most difficult. It can help one to stop infidelity. It can also help one to start keeping the true Seventh-day Sabbath holy. Whatever good skill you lack and desire to have, God’s Word can give you that. It can provide you with good communication and public speaking skills. If you lack marketing skills or any other skill that can make your business thrive, God’s Word can give you that.
God’s Word is Humble and Powerful
The Word of God does not possess pride.
Philippians 2:5-8 (KJV) – “5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
God is the humblest being in the universe. Jesus possessing infinite power, did not destroy the people who tortured and killed Him. Instead, He humbled Himself unto death, even the most painful death, the death of the cross. God’s Word possesses the greatest power and humility, just like God does.
God’s Word is not Harsh
1 Corinthians 13:5 (NKJV) – “Does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil.”
Love is not rude; it; it is polite. God’s Word is not harsh. When it rebukes a sinner, it does not rebuke them discourteously. Instead, it lovingly corrects them because its greatest aim is to change that sinner’s heart. Love does not seek its own benefit. It seeks the benefit of others. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son for the benefit of the world (John 3:16).
God loves us so much that He has given us commandments which will make us prosper if we obey them (Deuteronomy 8:1, Deuteronomy 28:1). Obeying God’s Word will not benefit God, it will benefit us, this is because God’s Word is love and love does not seek its own. Love is not provoked. One cannot successfully provoke the Word of God because it possesses strength beyond our imagination. Love does not think evil. God’s Word never has an evil motive. It always has a righteous motive.
God’s Word is Truth and Love
1 Corinthians 13:6-8 (NKJV) – “6 Does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.”
Just like love, God’s Word does not rejoice in iniquity. It rejoices in truth because God’s Word is Truth. God’s Word is the greatest teacher. The Bible is the foundation of all knowledge. Proverbs 1:7 (KJV) – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Information from the Bible is the most accurate information one can ever receive. Man-made science theories can change as they have changed throughout the years since man is to err. Truth, which is God’s Word, can never change. Therefore, the Bible is absolutely reliable.
“The opinions of learned men, the deductions of science, the creeds or decisions of ecclesiastical councils, as numerous and discordant as are the churches which they represent, the voice of the majority—not one nor all of these should be regarded as evidence for or against any point of religious faith. Before accepting doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain Thus saith the Lord in its support.”—The Great Controversy, Page 595, Ellen G. White.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things. The death of Jesus was very painful, but He took all that because of His love for us. God’s Word will give you endurance even in the toughest trials and struggles. Love believes in all true things. God’s Word is truth. It does not conflict with truth. Romans 10:17 (KJV) – “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
Studying God’s Word and obeying it boosts one faith. God’s word can make an unbeliever believe in God. God’s Word will not only enable one to believe, but it will also give them hope.
“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Rom. 10:17. The Scriptures are the great agency in the transformation of character. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy Word is truth.” John 17:17. If studied and obeyed, the Word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute. The Holy Spirit comes to convict of sin, and the faith that springs up in the heart works by love to Christ, conforming us in body, soul, and spirit to His own image. Then God can use us to do His will. The power given us works from within outwardly, leading us to communicate to others the truth that has been communicated to us.” – Christ Object Lessons, Page 100, Ellen G. White.
Love never fails. God never fails. Therefore, His Word can never fail.
Matthew 24:35 (KJV) – “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
God’s Word created Heaven and Earth, meaning it can also destroy them, but Heaven and Earth cannot destroy God’s Word.
“And even greater is the power of the Bible in the development of the spiritual nature. Man, created for fellowship with God, can only in such fellowship find his real life and development. Created to find in God his highest joy, he can find in nothing else that which can quiet the cravings of the heart, can satisfy the hunger and thirst of the soul. He who with sincere and teachable spirit studies God’s Word, seeking to comprehend its truths, will be brought in touch with its Author; and, except by his own choice, there is no limit to the possibilities of his development.” – Education, Page 125, Ellen G. White.
