VICTORY OVER SIN

KEY TEXT: Revelation 3:21 (KJV) – “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.”

Revelation 3:21 addresses the Laodicean church which was infamous for ‘lukewarmness.’ Christ is telling them, if they overcome that lukewarmness, they will sit with Him on His throne. Now this promise of sitting with Jesus Christ on His thrown goes beyond those who are lukewarm. It also goes to those who are full-time living in sin.

Jesus promises the special blessings of sitting with Him on His throne to the person who is successful in overcoming sin. He gives an example of Himself how He sits with God the Father in His throne because He overcame sin. The person who won’t be victorious in overcoming sin will not get that privilege.

We all have faced various temptations, and we know some are difficult to overcome. Each of us has ever struggled or is still struggling with at least one sin we find difficult to stop. Many addicts have visited counsellors and therapists to overcome their addiction with no success. Therefore, when Jesus gives such a promise to those who overcome, we feel we cannot partake in the promise because we have tried so hard and are still not victorious. It is like running a race for a long time that has no finish line.

This victory that we are struggling to get, who has it, or where does it come from?

1 Chronicles 29:11 (KJV) – “Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine; Thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and Thou art exalted as head above all.”

Victory comes from God. Therefore, victory belongs to God. Since victory comes from God, God is the only one who can give victory. We are too weak and insignificant to make ourselves victorious, regardless of our physical strength or level of education.

No amount of physical strength possessed by a human being can defeat temptations. Samson is a good example. No amount of education can defeat temptation. God not only possesses victory, but He is exalted above victory because He created victory.

How do we obtain victory?

Matthew 7:7 (KJV) – Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”

James 4:2 (KJV) – “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”

The Bible says in Matthew 7:7 God shall give us what we ask for. The Bible also says in James 4:2 that we do not have because we do not ask. Does this mean if we ask for anything, we can be given? 1 John 5:14 (KJV) – “And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us.” God is willing to give us everything in accordance with His will. God’s will is His Word because God’s will is in accordance with His Word. He does not do anything outside His Word. Getting victorious over sin is in accordance with His will. Therefore, if we ask Him for victory over sin, He will surely give us.

1 Samuel 17:36 (KJV) – “Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.”

David knew that Goliath had lost the battle before the battle started despite Goliath being huge in stature, physically strong and winning previous battles. How did David know this? He knew Goliath could not win because he defied the armies of the living God, thus dishonoring God. By the way, if you want to know a company or a country that is sinking, look if it entertains practices that dishonor God.

Some might say that some organizations have been successful for years while dishonoring God. Goliath was successful for years before meeting David, a young man who genuinely honored God. David had to do the opposite of what Goliath did for him to win. David understood that as long as God was by his side, he would not lose because he was backed up by omnipotent power. If a superpower country backs up a third-world country to fight against another third-world country, it feels victorious even before the battle begins because it knows it has a high chance of winning the war.

When you have God by your side, you will not only have a high chance of winning; you will win. High chances mean there is a slight possibility of loss. God offers no possibility of loss at all.

With God, you will successfully walk over all the challenges in your life. That includes all the tiny spots of ungodly character. The blood of Jesus is the best detergent of all sinful stains. It doesn’t matter how the tunnel is dark at the moment; God promises final victory. It does not matter how long you have been enslaved in lying, gossiping, stealing, fornication, adultery, masturbation, homosexuality, drug abuse and all other sins. God has power and is willing to give you victory over all these.

You may face a challenge in keeping the Sabbath holy and attending church because your job keeps you busy. You are finding it difficult to leave it because you have a family to feed, and you might have struggled before getting it. God will give you victory over that challenge.

Revelation 2:8-11 (KJV) – “And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.”

Victory does not always come easily. Athletes and other world champions endure many struggles and sacrifices to obtain victory. God knows that we may face life-threatening challenges before we become victorious. He knows that on the narrow way, we may face tribulations, poverty, and attacks by the enemy and fellow church members. However, He tells us to fear none of those things because He is walking with us. He knows if He leaves us alone, we will lose hope and stop the journey before we start.

God gives us a dazzling promise that even though we are hurt in this world while overcoming sin, we shall not be hurt by the second death. The ones who don’t overcome will get harmed in this life and ultimately lose eternal life and die a painful death through hellfire. The one who overcomes may be bruised in this life and may die a painful death in this life but will live happily in eternity.

What should we do to overcome this?

Revelation 2:16-17 (KJV) – “16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.”

We should repent of all sins we have committed. Repent when a sinful thought crosses your mind. Repent when you utter a wrong word. Repent immediately after you have realized you have done something wrong. We might have done some sins in the past, even when we were young children, and while we did them, we did not know that they were sinful. When we remember them, we need to repent. The Spirit of God might bring those events back to our memory. When we repent, we need to be specific about our sins. We should also repent of the sins of our fathers and forefathers so that we get free from generational curses. True repentance is asking God for forgiveness and turning away from sin.

“How shall a man be just with God? How shall the sinner be made righteous? Only through Christ can we be brought into harmony with God, with holiness; but how are we to come to Christ? Many are asking the same question as did the multitude on the Day of Pentecost, when, convicted of sin, they cried out, “What shall we do?” The first word of Peter’s answer was, “Repent.” Acts 2:37, 38. At another time, shortly after, he said, “Repent . . . and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” Acts 3:19.

Repentance includes sorrow for sin and turning away from it. We shall not renounce sin unless we see its sinfulness; until we turn away from it in heart, there will be no real change in the life.” – Steps to Christ, Page 23, Ellen G. White.

Isaiah 14:13-14 (KJV) – “13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.”

Satan was brought down because of pride. Therefore, the sure way to lose is pride. Eve wanted to be like God, so she fell into Satan’s temptation of eating the fruit. The same sin that caused Satan to fall from heaven caused Adam and Eve to be chased away from the Garden of Eden. Pride is a sure way to failure. Jesus, on the other hand, had to conquer sin through humility. Humility brings victory.

Philippians 2:5-11 (KJV) – “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

At the end of this journey, we should be able to say this:

2 Timothy 4:7-8 (KJV) – “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”

We need to fight the good fight. We should not give up. Instead, we should rise each time we fall. You may have prayed to God long enough to give you peace and remove your hot temper, but it is still there. Do not give up. Keep praying. If you stay focused on the journey, God will give you what you are looking for.

“For a long time I tried to gain the victory over sin, but I failed. I have since learned the reason. Instead of doing the part which God expects me to do, and which I can do, I was trying to do God’s part, which He does not expect me to do, and which I cannot do. Primarily, my part is not to win the victory, but to receive the victory which has already been won for me by Jesus Christ.” – His Victory Mine, Page 17.1, Ellen G. White.

What does God promise to those who are victorious?

Revelation 2:26-28 (KJV) – “26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth My works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of My Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star.”

Revelation 3:21 (KJV) – “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in His throne.”

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Father Lord, I come before You today with my heart fully surrendered unto You. Victory, power and majesty belong to You. You are worthy of all praise and honor. Thank You for giving me victory over sin. I receive it. In Jesus name, Amen.

Activity

  1. Take a small card or piece of paper.
  2. On one side, write down one sin or struggle you are currently battling (e.g., anger, gossip, addiction, fear, etc.).
  3. On the other side, write this faith declaration:

“Victory belongs to God, and I receive His victory today through Jesus Christ. I believe that He who overcame will also help me overcome. (Revelation 3:21)”

  1. Pray over the card, specifically asking God for victory over that one issue.
  2. Keep the card somewhere you’ll see daily (wallet, Bible, mirror). Each time you see it, whisper this prayer:

“Lord, I still trust You for victory. I receive it again today by faith.”

Do this for 7 days. Then write a reflection on any progress, peace, or encouragement you’ve experienced.
