KEY TEXT: Mark 3:35 (KJ21) – “For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is My brother and My sister and mother.”
In Mark 3:35, Jesus Christ taught that those who do God’s will are the true members of His family. Our earthly families are formed by people who are related to us by blood. All cultures around the world share this understanding of family. The Jews understood family in that sense too. Because God called Israel His chosen people, many believed that simply being born an Israelite automatically placed them inside God’s household.
This misunderstanding became dangerous. Some assumed that heritage guaranteed salvation. They trusted ancestry more than obedience and tradition more than repentance. Yet Jesus dismantled this idea. He declared that belonging to God is not determined by birth, but by faith and submission to God’s will.
The Bible had already warned against trusting physical descent. When the people relied on their lineage from Abraham, John the Baptist corrected them:
Matthew 3:9 (KJ21) – “And think not to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.”
God has never measured family by bloodline, but by relationship with Him. Even in the Old Testament, obedience—not ancestry—was the true mark of belonging to God.
Deuteronomy 10:12–13 (KJ21) – “And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?”
Jesus, therefore, revealed a deeper spiritual reality: God’s family is not ethnic, national, or biological — it is spiritual.
A New Birth, Not a Natural Birth
Jesus later explained this truth to Nicodemus. Entry into God’s family requires a new birth.
John 3:3 (KJ21) – “Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Verily, verily I say unto thee: Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”
Being born into a Christian home does not make one a child of God. Attending church does not make one part of God’s household. Even knowing Scripture does not automatically give spiritual inheritance. A person becomes a member of God’s family through faith in Christ and the transformation of the heart.
John 1:12–13 (KJ21) – “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
Notice the phrase “not of blood.” God intentionally removes genealogy as a requirement. Spiritual adoption replaces biological inheritance.
The Family Mark: Doing the Father’s Will
Jesus did not merely say, “whoever knows about God,” or “whoever claims God.” He said whoever does the will of God. Obedience is evidence of belonging.
Luke 6:46 (KJ21) – “And why call ye Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not the things which I say?”
A true relationship produces obedience. Not obedience as a means to earn salvation, but obedience as proof of genuine faith. Faith transforms behavior.
1 John 2:3–4 (KJ21) – “3 And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He that saith, ‘I know Him,’ and keepeth not His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
Members of Christ’s family are those who have the right of inheritance of God’s blessings. Therefore, those who keep the commandments of God demonstrate that they belong to Him.
Adoption Into God’s Household
The gospel introduces a beautiful concept: adoption. God does not merely accept believers as citizens — He receives them as children.
Romans 8:14–15 (KJ21) – “14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”
Through Christ, strangers become sons, and outsiders become heirs.
Galatians 4:6–7 (KJ21) – “6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, ‘Abba, Father!’ 7 Therefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”
This is far greater than earthly inheritance. Human families pass down land, wealth, or name. God’s family passes down eternal life.
Romans 8:17 (KJ21) – “And if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”
Beyond Culture, Race, and Nation
Jesus was quietly abolishing spiritual exclusivity. God’s family is not limited to one tribe, one nation, or one ethnicity.
Galatians 3:28–29 (KJ21) – “28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
In Christ, faith replaces nationality as the defining identity. Heaven will not be organized by bloodlines, passports, or ancestry, only by relationship with Christ.
The True Evidence of Family Resemblance
Earthly families share physical resemblance. God’s family shares spiritual resemblance — the character of Christ.
John 13:35 (KJ21) – “By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
Love, obedience, humility, forgiveness, and holiness become the “family resemblance” of believers.
1 John 3:10 (KJ21) – “In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.”
Conclusion
Jesus’ statement in Mark 3:35 was revolutionary. He lifted family beyond biology and placed it into the realm of faith. The closest relationship a human can have with Christ is not determined by proximity, heritage, or religious background, but by surrender to God’s will.
Some stood physically beside Jesus yet were not part of His family. Others were miles away — Gentiles, sinners, and outcasts — yet became His brothers and sisters through faith.
Today the same invitation stands. You may not share Abraham’s blood, a Christian upbringing, or a religious tradition, but you can still belong to God.
The door to God’s household is open.
Ephesians 2:19 (KJ21) – “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God.”
To do the will of God, to trust His Son, and to walk in obedience, this is what brings a person beyond blood relations and into the eternal family of God.

Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me into Your family through Jesus Christ. Help me not to trust in religion, background, or knowledge, but to truly do Your will. Change my heart so my life reflects Your character. Teach me to love others as my brothers and sisters in Christ, and lead me daily in obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
