KEY TEXT: Exodus 31:13 (AMP) – “But as for you, say to the Israelites, ‘You shall most certainly observe My Sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, so that you may know [without any doubt] and acknowledge that I am the Lord who sanctifies you and sets you apart [for Myself].’”
We should keep the Sabbath day holy. Keeping the Sabbath day symbolizes our dependence on God. It symbolizes our dependence on God to provide for us, protect us, save us, and sanctify us, as we can see in Exodus 31:13.
Exodus 20:8 (KJ21) — “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
The Sabbath is not merely a day of rest; it is a weekly reminder that God is the One sustaining our lives.
Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJ21) — “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth.”
God Cleanses What We Cannot Cleanse
Synonyms for sanctify are cleanse and purify. We are able to clean our bodies, our clothes, and our houses when they get dirty, but we are not able to clean our hearts. Only God can do that.
Jeremiah 17:9 (KJ21) — “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?”
The heart’s cleansing is the most vital cleansing we need—more than any other cleansing. You might have a clean body but a dirty mind. An impure mind will cause great harm to society. Therefore, the purification of the mind is the purification most needed.
Psalm 51:10 (KJ21) — “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
The Mind Determines Productivity
Despite the sinful nature, every human being is born with a powerful mind. The state of purity of the mind causes a huge difference in the productivity level of a person.
The man who had a legion of demons in him:
Mark 5:2–5 (KJ21) — “2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him from out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no man could bind him, no, not even with chains, 4 because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been rent asunder by him and the fetters broken in pieces; neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.”
People were afraid of him and ran away from him as a result of his demon possession:
Mark 5:15 (KJ21) — “And they came to Jesus, and saw him that had been possessed by the devil and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.”
He had strength, but his mind was corrupted; his life was unproductive.
The more impure your mind is, the more people will be repelled by you. The purer your mind is, the more people will be attracted to you.
A common saying goes, “People follow you for two reasons: either you are rich or beautiful.” Jesus was materially poor:
Matthew 8:20 (KJ21) — “The Son of Man hath not where to lay His head.”
And nothing in His physical appearance was extraordinary:
Isaiah 53:2 (KJ21) — “There is no beauty that we should desire Him.”
However, multitudes kept following Him:
Luke 5:15 (KJ21) — “Great multitudes came together to hear and to be healed by Him.”
They were drawn to the purity of His character and mind.
Purity Reflects Even Outwardly
After communing with God on the mountain for forty days, Moses’ face shone:
Exodus 34:29 (KJ21) — “The skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.”
Sometimes the purity of the mind even shows in outward physical appearance. The purity of the mind is also seen in a person’s words and actions.
Matthew 12:35 (KJ21) — “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things.”
You can easily recognize a madman by observing him. Likewise, you can easily recognize a genuine godly man by observing him.
The difference between the wealthy (those who gained wealth morally) and the poor (those who have no wealth or have ill-gotten wealth) is not possessions — it is the mind.
Give a poor person with an impure mind ten billion dollars, and the money will be squandered in a short time.
Proverbs 13:11 (KJ21) — “Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished.”
Take away everything from a wise man, and he can rebuild:
Proverbs 24:3 (KJ21) — “Through wisdom is a house builded.”
Satan loves to influence the mind through evil media, discouragement, and negative thinking.
2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJ21) — “The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.”
God’s role, on the other hand, is to sanctify the mind.
Romans 12:2 (KJ21) — “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
You do not need a larger mind — you need a sanctified mind. A larger mind filled with garbage only holds more garbage. It is like comparing a five-liter dustbin and a thousand-acre dumpsite. Both contain garbage, but the dumpsite stinks far more because it contains more.
A one-acre garden full of healthy vegetables is far more valuable than a thousand-acre dumpsite.
Space is not always created by buying more space. It can be created by cleaning the space already occupied. When sewer systems clog, we unclog them. When phone memory fills up, we delete unnecessary files.
Keeping the Sabbath does the same for the mind. It points us to the Master Sanctifier. God knows what is unnecessary in us and where it is hidden.
Ezekiel 36:26 (KJ21) — “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”
We cannot cleanse our minds because we do not know how — but God does.
When we keep the Sabbath by faith, God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves: He purifies our minds.
A Cleansed Mind Receives Truth
When you eat too much, you cannot take in healthy food. Likewise, when the mind is full, truth cannot enter. God clears our minds when we acknowledge our dependence on Him.
Satan’s impure mind causes stealing, killing, and destruction:
John 10:10 (KJ21) — “The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”
God, however, restores life.
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Our thoughts, understanding, and memory improve when the mind is purified. Then we gain knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.
Proverbs 2:6 (KJ21) — “For the Lord giveth wisdom; out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”
The woman with the issue of blood believed in her mind first:
Matthew 9:20–22 (KJ21) — “20 And behold, a woman who was diseased with an issue of blood for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the hem of His garment; 21 for she said to herself, “If I may but touch His garment, I shall be whole.”| 22 But Jesus turned about, and when He saw her, He said, “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.” And the woman was made whole from that hour.”
The centurion believed:
Matthew 8:8 (KJ21) — “Speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.”
Healing began in the mind before it appeared in the body.
Proverbs 4:23 (KJ21) — “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.”
“Keep thy heart with all diligence,” is the counsel of the wise man; “for out of it are the issues of life.” As man “thinketh in his heart, so is he.” The heart must be renewed by divine grace, or it will be in vain to seek for purity of life. He who attempts to build up a noble, virtuous character independent of the grace of Christ, is building his house upon the shifting sand. In the fierce storms of temptation it will surely be overthrown. David’s prayer should be the petition of every soul: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” And having become partakers of the heavenly gift, we are to go on unto perfection, being “kept by the power of God, through faith.” – Messages to Young People, Page 285.1, Ellen G. White.
“Yet we have a work to do to resist temptation. Those who would not fall a prey to Satan’s devices must guard well the avenues of the soul; they must avoid reading, seeing, or hearing that which will suggest impure thoughts. The mind should not be left to wander at random upon every subject that the adversary of souls may suggest. “Gird up the loins of your mind,” says the apostle Peter, “be sober, … not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: but as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of living.” Says Paul, “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” This will require earnest prayer and unceasing watchfulness. We must be aided by the abiding influence of the Holy Spirit, which will attract the mind upward, and habituate it to dwell on pure and holy things. And we must give diligent study to the Word of God. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to Thy word.” “Thy word,” says the Psalmist, “have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.”— Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 460, Ellen G. White.
Adam was created with a pure mind, but sin corrupted it. He died at 930 years (Genesis 5:5).
As sin increased, lifespan decreased:
Psalm 90:10 (KJ21) — “The days of our years are threescore years and ten.”
Humanity also morally degenerated:
Genesis 6:5 (KJ21) — “Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
Adam and Eve received pure minds by grace. Christ now offers restoration to us.
Revelation 3:20 (KJ21) — “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”
We must willingly receive Him.
1 John 1:9 (KJ21) — “He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God will not force purity upon us. We must desire it and accept it by faith.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the Sabbath, the sign that You are the One who sanctifies us. Please cleanse my heart and renew my mind. Remove every impure thought and fill me with Your truth. Teach me to depend fully on You and to reflect Your character daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This coming Sabbath:
- Turn off all non-essential media (phone, TV, social media) for at least 2–3 hours.
- Read Psalm 51, John 17, and Exodus 20:8–11 slowly.
- Write down one habit or thought pattern you want God to cleanse.
- Pray specifically for God to replace it with a Godly thought (Philippians 4:8).
