PEACE IN THE MIDDLE OF A STORM

PEACE IN THE MIDDLE OF A STORM

Mark 4:38 (KJV)“And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?”

“Suddenly a flash of lightning pierces the darkness, and they see Jesus lying asleep, undisturbed by the tumult. In amazement and despair they exclaim, “Master, carest Thou not that we perish?” How can He rest so peacefully, while they are in danger and battling with death?” – The Desire of Ages, Page 334.6, Ellen G. White.

“Never did a soul utter that cry unheeded. As the disciples grasp their oars to make a last effort, Jesus rises. He stands in the midst of His disciples, while the tempest rages, the waves break over them, and the lightning illuminates His countenance. He lifts His hand, so often employed in deeds of mercy, and says to the angry sea, “Peace, be still.”” – The Desire of Ages, Page 335.2, Ellen G. White.

The storm was very heavy, but Jesus was sleeping on a pillow in the back of the ship. His disciples were extremely troubled about the raging storm, but Jesus seemed completely unbothered. The storm did not disturb Jesus. He was peacefully and comfortably resting.

The external circumstances could not affect the internal power that Jesus Christ had within Him. They could not affect the Word of God that Jesus Christ fully believed in. However, the disciples were easily affected by the external circumstances. They said to Jesus in Mark 4:38, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?”

This represents you and me when we tell God:
“Don’t You care that I don’t have rent?”
“Don’t You care that I don’t have tuition fees?”
“Don’t You care that I don’t have a wife or a husband?”
“Don’t You care that I don’t have a job?”
“Don’t You care that I don’t have money to buy food?”
“Don’t You care that I am struggling with this addiction?”

But the question is:

Mark 4:40 (KJV)“And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”

The solution to the storm is Jesus. Thus He says:

Matthew 11:28 (KJV)“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Jesus was resting in the midst of the storm, but His disciples were experiencing unrest. Jesus was resting because He had faith in God the Father who sent Him. His disciples were troubled because they lacked faith. The Lord of the Sabbath is Jesus Christ. It is only He who can give us true rest.

Matthew 8:26 (KJV)“And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?”

When you believe in God’s Word, the power of God’s Word will prove itself stronger than your external circumstances and your internal conflicts.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are present even in the midst of the storms of life. Help me to trust Your Word more than the circumstances around me. Increase my faith so that I may rest in You just as Jesus rested in the storm. Teach me to bring my burdens to You and to find true peace in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

Take a few minutes today to write down three storms or worries in your life. Then next to each one, write a Bible promise that reminds you to trust God (for example, Matthew 11:28 or 1 Peter 5:7). Pray over these promises and consciously choose to give those burdens to God.
