KEY TEXT: 1 Chronicles 29:17 (NKJV) – “I know also, my God, that You test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness.”

God tests the heart, and He delights in uprightness.

Job 1:1 (NKJV) – “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil.”

Now God put Job to the test by allowing Satan to take everything from him. Satan took his property, his children and his health. God allowed this to happen because He was putting Job on a test. God was testing if Job would still be upright despite the trials. God was trying Job’s heart to see if He would still hold firmly to Him after the devil took everything away from him.

Deuteronomy 8:2 (KJV) – “And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments, or no.”

“The fact that we are called upon to endure trial proves that the Lord Jesus sees in us something very precious, which He desires to develop. If He saw in us nothing whereby He might glorify His name He would not spend time in refining us. We do not take special pains in pruning brambles. Christ does not cast worthless stones into His furnace. It is valuable ore that He tests.” – Counsels for the Church, Page 54.6, Ellen G. White.

God led the Israelites through the wilderness experience to test their hearts. He wanted to know if they truly loved Him. If they will still obey Him amidst the trials.

Sometimes when life trials come to you, it is not because you are the worst sinner. Like Job, you may be a perfect and upright man, but God is trying to test your heart. You may be God’s peculiar treasure, just like the Israelites, but God has chosen to test your heart.

You may have been faithful in returning the tithes and offerings and still undergoing challenging financial situations. You may be steadfast in church and believe in God to heal you of a particular illness, but it’s getting worse instead of getting better. You may lose your job or an opportunity because of keeping the Sabbath and stay for a while before getting another job or opportunity.

Don’t lose hope; trust in God. The promises that He has set forth for you, through His word, are sure. Isaiah 55:10-11 (KJV) – “¹⁰ For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater: ¹¹ So shall my Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: It shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” The promises God has given you will be accomplished in your life if you don’t give up. Be persistent in your Christian journey because God tests the heart and has pleasure in uprightness.

“The Lord in His providence brings men where He can test their moral powers and reveal their motives of action, that they may improve what is right in themselves and put away that which is wrong. God would have His servants become acquainted with the moral machinery of their own hearts. In order to bring this about, He often permits the fire of affliction to assail them that they may become purified.” – Counsels for the Church, Page 54.7, Ellen G. White.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your love and wisdom in guiding my life. I know that You test the hearts of Your children and take delight in those who walk uprightly before You. Just as You tested Job and led the Israelites through the wilderness, I trust that my trials are not meant to destroy me but to refine me.

Lord, give me the strength to remain faithful when my faith is tested. Help me to hold fast to Your promises, knowing that Your Word will never return void. Purify my heart, remove anything that is not pleasing to You, and mold me into the person You desire me to be.

Even when I do not understand my trials, let me trust that You are in control. May I stand firm in righteousness, knowing that You take pleasure in an upright heart.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

• Write down a difficult situation or trial you are currently facing.
• How does knowing that God tests the heart and delights in uprightness change the way you view your trials?
• Ask yourself: How is this trial testing my heart? What attitudes, fears, or weaknesses is God revealing through this?
• Read Job 1:1, Deuteronomy 8:2, and 1 Chronicles 29:17 and reflect on how these verses apply to your situation.
• Write one promise from the Bible (such as Isaiah 55:10-11) that gives you hope in your trial.
• Identify one way you can remain faithful in this trial (e.g., continuing in prayer, maintaining integrity, trusting in God’s timing).
• Pray and surrender your situation to God, asking Him to refine your heart and make you stronger in faith.
• Share this message with someone.
