KEY TEXT: Genesis 4:7 (AMP) – “If you do well [believing Me and doing what is acceptable and pleasing to Me], will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well [but ignore My instruction], sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you [to overpower you], but you must master it.”
God spoke these words to Cain because he was angry that his offering had been rejected while Abel’s was accepted. God had instituted the sacrificial system after Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. The lamb sacrifice pointed to Jesus Christ, the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity (John 1:29, KJ21).
When God instructed Cain and Abel to bring a sacrifice, Abel obeyed by offering a lamb, and God accepted him. Scripture says, “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and by it he, being dead, yet speaketh” (Hebrews 11:4, KJ21). Cain, however, brought fruits and vegetables, and God rejected both him and his offering.
Instead of repenting and correcting his ways, Cain allowed anger and sadness to consume him. God, in His mercy, gave him another chance: “And the LORD said unto Cain, ‘Why art thou wroth? And why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?’” (Genesis 4:6–7, KJ21). This was a call to obedience. If Cain did the right thing, he would be accepted and honored by God.
God still gives us the same invitation today. Scripture reminds us: “For them that honor Me I will honor, and they that despise Me shall be lightly esteemed” (1 Samuel 2:30 KJ21). If you truly want God to accept and honor you, obey Him. Put Him first above everything else, even above people or activities that compete for your loyalty: “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJ21).
Maybe you’ve noticed that your efforts outside God’s will are not bearing fruit—such as engaging in secular activities on the Sabbath instead of keeping it holy: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8 KJ21). God is calling you, just as He called Cain, to change your ways. Obedience brings blessing, and disobedience brings rejection.
Takeaway Thought: When you choose obedience, you choose acceptance and honor from God.
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that obedience brings acceptance and honor from You. Help me to put You first in my life and to master sin instead of letting it master me. Strengthen me to walk in righteousness daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
