John 8:31 (KJV) – “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.”

The Greek word used for the English word continue is menō. Menō means to remain, abide, stay, dwell, persist, hold fast, and not depart.

Jesus is telling us that when we remain in His Word, when we abide in His Word, when we stay in His Word, when we dwell in His Word, when we persist in His Word, when we hold fast to His Word, when we do not depart from His Word—then we are His true disciples.

Are you finding it difficult to keep the Sabbath? Persist in your zeal to keep it, and God will make it easy for you.

“The power of self-restraint strengthens by exercise. That which at first seems difficult, by constant repetition grows easy, until right thoughts and actions become habitual. If we will, we may turn away from all that is cheap and inferior and rise to a high standard; we may be respected by men and beloved of God.” — The Ministry of Healing, 491 (1905), Ellen G. White.

The meaning of a disciple is a learner. A disciple also means someone who follows a teacher’s instructions. The test of a true disciple of Jesus, the test of a true learner of Jesus, the test of a true follower of Jesus, holds firmly to His Word. The enemy of souls will bring devices to make you lose hold of God’s Word. When you get caught in his snare and lose hold of the Almighty Word, you prove that you are not a true disciple of Jesus Christ.

Satan might bring temptations that you are most likely to give in to. Once you give in to them, you begin feeling that you are so unworthy to go before God. Therefore, you start neglecting prayer and Bible study. If you do that for long, you eventually lose hold of God’s Word.

The Devil will bring various afflictions into your life to torment you. He might bring sickness, poverty, loss of a loved one, or any other discouraging circumstance to cause you to let go of God’s Word. He may bring situations that will make you question the presence of God or the reliability of the promises of God. Do not. Hold firmly to God’s Word.

Psalm 91:1 (KJV) – “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Jesus Christ’s true disciples are those who dwell in His Word. Psalm 91:1 says that whoever dwells in God’s Word (the secret place of the Most High) shall always be under the protection of God. When God removed the hedge of protection He had placed around Job, Satan prevailed in Job’s life with all forms of attack (Job 1:12–19). Having walked with God faithfully, Job learned to love God for who God is and not for what He can give. Therefore, even in the most trying circumstances, he was still grateful to God (Job 1:20–22), and he refused to curse God (Job 2:10).

Many of us Christians love God for what He can give. We love people for the benefit they can bring to our lives. Very few have reached that level of loving God and loving people unconditionally. True love is proven best when you have no reason to love someone, yet you still love them. Job proved to be a true disciple of God, through thick and thin.

Acts 11:26 (KJ21) – “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church and taught many people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.”

The people of Antioch were the ones who first called the disciples Christians. Most people in Antioch were Gentiles who worshiped other gods; therefore, they were pagans. The term Christian comes from the Greek word Christianos, which means “a follower of Christ” or “belonging to Christ.”

The people in Antioch called Christ’s followers Christians because of how they uplifted Christ. They uplifted Jesus Christ by constantly teaching about Him and by consistently living a life that was in accordance with His Word.

Today, many people call themselves Christians because they were born into a Christian family. Some call themselves Christians because they merely attend church services. There needs to be a test of true discipleship. True discipleship is following Jesus Christ wherever He leads.

Matthew 7:21 (KJ21) – “Not everyone who saith unto Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who doeth the will of My Father who is in Heaven.”

The Greek word for Lord is kýrios, which means master, owner, one with absolute authority, ruler, and one deserving obedience. It wasn’t just a polite title like “sir.” It meant someone who has the right to command your life.

Being a true disciple of Jesus goes beyond calling Him Lord. This is because even demons acknowledge His authority and call Him Lord (Mark 1:24; Luke 8:28; James 2:19). Whoever does God’s will is the one who will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Obedience to God is the ultimate pass to the test of a true disciple of Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to remain in Your Word every day. Strengthen me to hold firmly to Your truth through trials, temptations, and challenges. Teach me to obey You fully and to live as a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. Today, choose one Bible verse and write it down. Read it three times during the day: morning, afternoon, and evening. Ask God to help you live out that verse in your actions.
