Proverbs 3:27 (NKJV) – “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.”
James 2:15-16 (KJV) – “15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?”
Let us consider some examples of withholding good from those to whom it is due:
- When you procrastinate and do not work on your idea, you are withholding good from those it is due.
- When you have been given responsibility anywhere, be it in the office or church, and fail to carry it out or do it poorly, you are withholding good from those it is due.
- When you fail to do everything with excellence (Ecclesiastes 9:10), you are withholding good from those it is due.
- When you hide your Christianity from people to fit in or look cool, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- When you give someone the wrong advice, knowing it very well is wrong. You are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- When you lie to someone, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- When you see something good in a person and fail to complement it for selfish reasons, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- When you fail to tithe, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- When you fail to give to the poor, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- If you fail to use your gifts and talents, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- If you fail to do everything to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31), you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- Failing to pray for others is withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- Failing to study God’s Word is withholding good from those to whom it is due because God’s word can change all unrighteous characters.
- Failing to share Truth is withholding good from those due to it.
- Preaching water and drinking wine is withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- If someone oppressed comes to you needing a listening ear, and you fail to give it, you are withholding good from those to whom it is due.
- Failing to attend fellowship with others on Sabbath or on any other opportunity which is within your reach is withholding good from those to whom it is due.
Hebrews 11:29 (KJV) – “By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.”
God told the Egyptians to let the Israelites go. Instead of obeying God, they pursued them, chasing them, trying to get them back, and as a result, they drowned.
You might be drowning in life because you constantly withhold good from those to whom it is due.
“In the harvest the seed is multiplied. A single grain of wheat, increased by repeated sowings, would cover a whole land with golden sheaves. So widespread may be the influence of a single life, of even a single act.” – Education, Page 109.2, Ellen G. White.
MAY YOU LOVE TO GIVE MORE THAN TO RECEIVE!
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the many blessings You have given me. Help me to never withhold good from those to whom it is due. Give me a heart that is generous, a spirit that is obedient, and hands that are quick to serve. May I use my gifts, time, and resources for Your glory and the benefit of others. Let me not be selfish or fearful, but full of faith, love, and kindness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activity
Identify one area where you may have been withholding good—whether in your work, relationships, giving, or faith. Take deliberate action to correct it today. For example:
- If you have been procrastinating on an idea, take the first step to bring it to life.
- If you have not been giving generously, find a person or ministry in need, and bless them.
- If you have held back encouragement, take time to compliment or uplift someone today.
- If you have been silent about your faith, share a testimony or scripture with someone.
Let this be a habit—choosing to do good whenever it is in your power to do so!
