When Jesus entered Capernaum, He was approached by a centurion,
The Roman soldier believed in the Son of God, the Son of Zion,
Whose Word stands firm and does not change like a chameleon,
He believed that Christ’s power transcends his weapons of iron.
Lord, my servant lieth at home sick and grievously tormented,
On Emmanuel’s ears, the centurion with anguish lamented,
His sickly servant in God’s loving arms he presented,
Among all physicians, Jesus is the most augmented.
Lord, I am not worthy for you to come under my roof,
He told Jesus to speak His Word only, the Word that’s living proof,
The Bible has power for God’s Word is truth,
Blessed is he who believeth it, and everything it sayeth, he doeth.
Verily I say to you, In Israel, I have not seen faith like this,
Jesus astonished by the Roman, He had never seen faith like His,
His own people rejected Him, some betrayed Him with a kiss,
God’s Word knows no distance and bounds, it can make flames freeze.
Matthew 8:5-10 (KJV) – “5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto Him a centurion, beseeching Him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. 8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the Word only, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 When Jesus heard it, He marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.”
In the above text we see that Jesus healed the centurion servant. The centurion felt that his house was unworthy for the Lord Jesus to step into it. He believed that it is possible for Jesus to speak a word from where He was, and his servant would be healed. Many are waiting to hear God’s physical voice so that they can do what God has told them to do. They neglect Bible study, not knowing that the power in the Bible is the same as the power in God’s physical voice.
The centurion told Jesus that he is a man of authority and whatever he commands his servants to do, they do it quickly. If that is the case and he is a mortal human being, how much more can Jesus do? He believed in as much as he was powerful, God is more powerful than him. In his faith, humility is shown. Many successful men and woman who are in top leadership positions often foolishly believe that no one is above them. They may not say it in words, but you can witness that belief in their actions.
When the centurion servant acknowledged that God is more authoritative than him and more powerful than him and that the Lord can do more than him, he pleased God. This scenario aligns with the verse in Matthew 7:11 (KJV) that says, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?”
It also aligns with the story of the unjust judge who had no respect for God or man.
Luke 18:1-8 (AMP) – “1 Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart, 2 saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and had no respect for man. 3 There was a [desperate] widow in that city and she kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice and legal protection from my adversary.’ 4 For a time he would not; but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow continues to bother me, I will give her justice and legal protection; otherwise by continually coming she [will be an intolerable annoyance and she] will wear me out.’” 6 Then the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says! 7 And will not [our just] God defend and avenge His elect [His chosen ones] who cry out to Him day and night? Will He delay [in providing justice] on their behalf? 8 I tell you that He will defend and avenge them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find [this kind of persistent] faith on the earth?”
If an unjust judge can hear the cry of that persistent woman, how much more shall a perfect and righteous God do?
A centurion is a commander of a Roman army. In other words, he is a Roman soldier. Jesus said in Matthew 8:10 that He has never seen such faith in Israel. The Romans did not believe in God, and they barely possessed God’s Word. On the other hand, the Israelites believed in God and had the privilege of having messengers of God (for example prophets) ministering to them. However, none of them showed the level of faith that the centurion did.
Luke 4:16 (KJV) – “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.”
Jesus’ custom was to go to the Synagogue on the Sabbath day. The Bible says in Matthew 12:8 that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath day is a day of rest. Therefore, if Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and the Sabbath is a day of rest, we should conclude that Jesus is the Lord who wants to give people rest. He went to the synagogue every Sabbath to give the people rest.
It was His custom to go to the Synagogue every Sabbath. It was, and it is still His custom to give His people rest. God wants you to rest. You cannot enjoy that rest when you are suffering. This means that He wants to take away the suffering from you. Jesus delights to give people rest. Jesus delights in giving people blessings. Jesus delights in curing the sick. Jesus delights in taking away all burdens of affliction. Matthew 11:28 (KJ21) – “Come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. When the centurion approached him, despite being a Roman, Jesus gave him rest.
One good thing about ministering to other people that are not of our faith is that we get to witness Godly attributes that are not common in our faith. For example, some unbelievers are more generous than Christians. Some of them are less greedy than Christians. Others have more love than Christians. Like the centurion, some have more faith in God than Christians.
“The Jews had been instructed from childhood concerning the work of the Messiah. The inspired utterances of patriarchs and prophets and the symbolic teaching of the sacrificial service had been theirs. But they had disregarded the light; and now they saw in Jesus nothing to be desired. But the centurion, born in heathenism, educated in the idolatry of imperial Rome, trained as a soldier, seemingly cut off from spiritual life by his education and surroundings, and still further shut out by the bigotry of the Jews, and by the contempt of his own countrymen for the people of Israel,—this man perceived the truth to which the children of Abraham were blinded. He did not wait to see whether the Jews themselves would receive the One who claimed to be their Messiah. As the “light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9) had shone upon him, he had, though afar off, discerned the glory of the Son of God.” – The Desire of Ages, Page 317.3, Ellen G. White.
The centurion believed that Jesus did not have to be where he was for Him to heal his servant. You do not have to travel long distances for you to get God’s blessings. You can get God’s blessings where you are. You might like a certain genuine online preacher and you want to meet him, but you do not have the funds to go where he is. Before you look for those funds to go and meet him, ask yourself if you have applied the entire truth that he has preached online.
Some Christians go round looking for prophets to heal them from their various diseases. Some get conned by some false prophets while some invite demonic spirits into their lives through ‘miracles’ done to them by these false prophets. Jesus can heal you right where you are without the need of you having to travel anywhere.
Psalm 138:2 (KJ21) – “I will worship toward Thy holy temple, and praise Thy name for Thy lovingkindness and for Thy truth, for Thou hast magnified Thy word above all Thy name.” God has placed His Word above all His name. Therefore, God’s Word has more power than we can ever imagine.
““If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Mark 9:23. It is faith that connects us with heaven and brings us strength for coping with the powers of darkness. In Christ, God has provided means for subduing every evil trait and resisting every temptation, however strong. But many feel that they lack faith, and therefore they remain away from Christ. Let these souls, in their helpless unworthiness, cast themselves upon the mercy of their compassionate Saviour. Look not to self, but to Christ. He who healed the sick and cast out demons when He walked among men is still the same mighty Redeemer. Then grasp His promises as leaves from the tree of life: “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37. As you come to Him, believe that He accepts you, because He has promised. You can never perish while you do this—never.” – The Ministry of Healing, Page 65.4, Ellen G. White.
The centurion believed in God’s Word more than anything else. He requested Jesus to speak a word from where He was. He believed that the power of God’s Word is not limited or dependent on the physical location because God’s Word created physical locations. He believed that God’s Word knows no boundaries and restrictions. God’s Word needs no transmitting signal, it is its own transmitting signal. God’s Word goes where no human being can go. It does what nobody else can do, only God.
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Dear God, I come to You in the name of Jesus. Please help me to understand the magnanimity and power of Your Holy Word. Lord, help me to believe in it with all my heart and with all my might. Through it, do miracles in my life like You did with the centurion servant. Please help me to genuinely care for others. Please grant me the humility to change where Your Word tells me to change. In Jesus name, Amen.
Activity
- Write down some of the things that you have witnessed Christ’s power doing in your life.
- What problem are you facing that you need it to be taken away? Pray about it and seek counsel from the Bible on how to solve it.
- Read Psalm 138:2, find out the names of God and meditate on how God has exalted His Word above His name.
- Reflect on your faith journey and ask yourself if people can look at your life and say, “I have never seen a faith like this.”
- Read the story of the centurion and how he cared for his servant. Ask yourself if you genuinely care for those around you like the centurion did. If you say you do, what do you do in actions to show that you care? If you do not do anything, what can you do to show them that you care?
