Get Truth Get Life

KEY TEXT: Ezekiel 37:5 (NKJV) – “Thus says the Lord God to these bones: ‘Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live.’”

Bones are the final components of a human being to remain after a person dies. When the body dies, its parts begin to decompose. Once buried, termites and other insects in the soil begin eating it. The last thing that stays is the bones. The skeletal stage is a stage beyond death.

When Lazarus had been dead for four days, his body was still far from reaching the skeletal stage. His body had already begun decomposing:

John 11:39 (KJV) – “Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.”

But Jesus Christ raised him:

John 11:43–44 (KJV) – “And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.”

Lazarus’ case seemed to be beyond hope. People had probably prayed fervently for him when he was sick, but instead of getting better, he became worse. When Lazarus died, those who were praying for him thought that Lazarus had left them with unanswered prayers. Some people even came to Jesus personally to call Him to attend to Lazarus when he was sick. However, Jesus did not come at that time. Instead, He came four days after Lazarus had died—and raised Lazarus from the dead. A beautiful gospel song says, “Even when He (Jesus) is four days late, He is still on time.”

If Lazarus’ case was beyond hope—a man who had just been dead for four days—how much more the bodies of those who have reached the skeletal stage? No power in the universe can revive a body in this stage, except God’s omnipotent infinite power.

In Ezekiel 37:5 (NKJV), we see God speaking directly to those bones: “Thus says the Lord God to these bones: ‘Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live.’”

God did not just speak to bones; He spoke to dry bones:

Ezekiel 37:4 (NKJV) – “Again He said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord!’”

It is pointless for a human being to speak to the body of a dead person. But God spoke to dry bones, which had stayed without flesh for a long time.

Human beings are limited in what they can speak to. How many times do we speak to fellow human beings who are alive, with well-functioning ears and brains, and they still do not listen? Some even go to the extent of shouting, but still the people they are shouting to don’t listen. Yet God spoke to what was far beyond life—bones that had no ears, no mind, no flesh.

When talking to the bones, God began with the word “surely.” Here we see no hesitation, for it is a sure promise. He goes on to say: “I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live.” The Lord God is the source of breath. He is the source of all life. God is the only one who can bring a body that is dead back to life. He is the only one who can bring a body that is beyond death back to life.

What Does All This Tell Us?

This passage teaches us that we should not despair in seeking God for His blessings. We should not grow weary in asking God’s help to transform people and their situations. Keep in mind, the people we are praying for are still alive, none of them is beyond hope.

As Beres Hammond (singer) once said: “Now I know that once you have life, there’s a chance you’ll be able to overcome. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. It’s not over until it’s done.”

As long as you are alive and believe in God, you have an abundance of hope.

As you remember the Sabbath, always remember that God is the Creator, Sustainer, Sanctifier, and Savior. Always remember that He can bring to life bodies that are beyond death. Therefore, never get tired of praying for your situation or for anyone else’s situation. It is not beyond hope.

Do not grow weary in walking in the way God has commanded you. Do not grow weary in doing what God has told you to do to change your situation. No situation you are facing has reached the skeletal stage. No situation you are facing has reached the dry bones stage.

Genesis 2:7 (KJV) – “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

If God can breathe life into the dust of the ground—the dirt that is stepped upon—if He can breathe life into bones, He can surely breathe eternal life into you. He can surely breathe life into your relative or friend who has not yet died but is on their deathbed. He can surely breathe life into your situation and into the people you are praying for.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are the Giver of life and the Restorer of hope. Just as You breathed life into dust and raised dry bones to live again, breathe new life into me, my loved ones, and every situation that seems hopeless. Strengthen my faith to trust You even when things appear beyond repair. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

• Take a piece of paper and write down one situation in your life, or in someone else’s life, that currently feels “dry” or hopeless.
• Pray over it, asking God to breathe His life and power into that situation.
• Keep the paper in your Bible at Ezekiel 37 as a reminder that nothing is beyond God’s power to revive.
