KEY TEXT: Exodus 32:31-32 (NKJV) – “³¹ Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! ³² Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.’”

Moses acknowledged before God that the people had not only sinned but had committed a great sin. According to him, the sin was so great that he doubted if God would be willing to forgive them. We often think that God is willing to forgive some sins but not others, because we see certain sins as being of such great magnitude.

After the people sinned, Moses interceded for them. His intercession for the people showed that he was a very selfless man. He requested God to blot out his name from the Book of Life if God was not willing to forgive the people.

At that time, Moses himself had not sinned, as he was coming from communing with God. If God had ended the world on that day, everyone living at that time would probably have perished, and Moses would have been the only one allowed to go to heaven. As a result of their sin, the people would burn in hell while Moses would enjoy the beauty, bliss, and pleasure of heaven.

Moses’ plea to God showed that he was willing to forfeit eternal life and endless joy. He wanted to share in the agony of the people he was leading, even though the blame was not on him, as he was not with them when they committed that terrible sin.

Hebrews 11:24-25 (KJ21) – “²⁴ By faith Moses, when he had come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, ²⁵ choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.”

When we read Hebrews 11:24-25, we can clearly see that Moses was a selfless leader. However, one can argue that Moses chose to suffer affliction with the people of God because he was expecting the future eternal riches that God would provide him. When we read Exodus 32:31-32, we see that his selflessness was deeper than what many of us assume when we read Hebrews 11:24-25. In Exodus 32:31-32, we see that Moses was willing to lose everything, including the ultimate promise of faith (eternal life), for the sake of his people.

Many of us seek God so that our lives here on earth can be blessed. We seek God so that He can heal us from a certain sickness. We seek God so that He can help us do well in school. We seek God so that He can come through for our financial situation. We seek God so that He can transform a wayward child or sibling. We seek God so that He can solve various other life challenges that we have.

Very few people on this earth seek God because they genuinely want to inherit eternal life. I have met none who seek God as Moses did. I do not say they do not exist; I have simply never met them. When we read Exodus 32:31-32, we see that Moses was not seeking God because he wanted to inherit eternal life, but because he was seeking God for who God is. He sought to glorify God and bless others, even if God chose to deny him access to heaven. The depth of love and selflessness shown by this Israelite leader is quite rare and unmatched. If we had leaders like that today, God’s will on earth would surely be done as it is in heaven.

The Sabbath is a reminder that true love for God is not rooted in what He gives us, but in who He is. Just as Moses sought God’s glory above his own reward, the Sabbath calls us to lay aside self-interest and delight in the Lord Himself. In resting with Him, we learn to love as He loves and to intercede for others with the same selfless spirit.

Romans 8:34 (KJ21) – “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ who died, yea rather, who is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”

Hebrews 7:25 (KJ21) – “Therefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.”

1 Timothy 2:5 (KJ21) – “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”

Hebrews 9:24 (KJ21) – “For Christ has not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true, but into Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.”

Despite his great love and selflessness, Moses was an imperfect human being, just as all of us are. Jesus Christ is perfect and holy. If Moses interceded for human beings like that, how much more does Jesus intercede for us? When guilt accuses us, Christ intercedes. When we fall short, Christ intercedes. When Satan tempts us, Christ intercedes.

In other words, it will be easier to go to heaven than it will be to go to hell.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us, through Moses, what true selfless love looks like. Thank You even more for Jesus, who perfectly intercedes for us and gave His life so that we might live. Teach us to seek You not just for Your blessings, but for who You are. Fill our hearts with love for others and help us to reflect Your selfless spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

• Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed for 5–10 minutes.
• Take a notebook or a piece of paper and write down the names of people you feel burdened to pray for — family, friends, neighbors, or even people you find difficult to love.
• Next to each name, write a short prayer or blessing, asking God to meet their needs, guide them, and reveal Himself to them.
• Take a moment to reflect on Moses’ example: he was willing to forfeit his own comfort and eternal reward for others. Ask God to help you grow in selfless love and to intercede for others as Christ intercedes for you.
• End by thanking God for Jesus’ perfect intercession and commit to pray for the people you listed regularly.
