KEY TEXT: Exodus 32:1 (AMP) – “Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, they gathered together before Aaron and said to him, ‘Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’”

At that moment, when the people requested a god, Moses was still on Mount Sinai (also called Mount Horeb), where he had gone up to meet with God. He was receiving the Ten Commandments and instructions for the covenant (see Exodus 24:18; 31:18).

Moses was communing with God at Mount Sinai. He was receiving a very important document—the Ten Commandments. It was God who was giving them to him, and God had a reason why He had kept him there for forty days and forty nights. The length of time Moses spent there was totally dependent upon God’s timing. Even if he wanted to, there was no way he would have spent less than forty days there. There was a reason why God needed those forty days, a reason that only God fully understood.

“While Moses was absent it was a time of waiting and suspense to Israel. The people knew that he had ascended the mount with Joshua, and had entered the cloud of thick darkness which could be seen from the plain below, resting on the mountain peak, illuminated from time to time with the lightnings of the divine Presence. They waited eagerly for his return. Accustomed as they had been in Egypt to material representations of deity, it had been hard for them to trust in an invisible being, and they had come to rely upon Moses to sustain their faith. Now he was taken from them. Day after day, week after week passed, and still he did not return. Notwithstanding the cloud was still in view, it seemed to many in the camp that their leader had deserted them, or that he had been consumed by the devouring fire.” – Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 315.1, Ellen G. White.

“During this period of waiting, there was time for them to meditate upon the law of God which they had heard, and to prepare their hearts to receive the further revelations that He might make to them. They had none too much time for this work; and had they been thus seeking a clearer understanding of God’s requirements, and humbling their hearts before Him, they would have been shielded from temptation. But they did not do this, and they soon became careless, inattentive, and lawless. Especially was this the case with the mixed multitude. They were impatient to be on their way to the Land of Promise—the land flowing with milk and honey. It was only on condition of obedience that the goodly land was promised them, but they had lost sight of this. There were some who suggested a return to Egypt, but whether forward to Canaan or backward to Egypt, the masses of the people were determined to wait no longer for Moses.” – Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 315.2, Ellen G. White. 

The impatience of the people caused them to ask for another god. They wanted a god whom they had made and whom they could control. This is because the Lord God, the only true God, was so big and mighty that it was impossible to control Him. They wanted a god they could twist and turn. What folly! How can people contradict themselves by wanting a being or leader who is above them, and yet whom they are above at the same time? You want to be led and directed by someone greater than you, and yet who you are greater than at the same time. How is that even possible?

This confusion is often practiced among Christians even today. Many Christians grow weary and tired of waiting for God. They forget that God is not slow concerning His promise (2 Peter 3:9).

It is quite common to hear Christians say that the things of God take such a long time. As a result, they resort to their own devices, other gods. Some turn to the powers of darkness, such as consulting witches and false prophets. When Satan sees this, he becomes happy, offering them quick results that always lead to short-term pleasure but long-term pain.

Christians grow tired of missing out on job opportunities that compel them to work on the Sabbath. Thus, they choose such opportunities to change their financial situation. Some grow weary of waiting on God for the marriage partner He has chosen for them to have a child with. Therefore, they settle for anyone who can sire a child for them. Some cannot wait to get married the right way; therefore, they choose the wrong ways, such as “come-we-stay” marriages and fornication.

The people went to Aaron and requested that he make for them a god. Who was Aaron? Aaron was the elder brother of Moses. He was also a high priest, and thus a respectable man in society. They probably thought that because Aaron was both the elder brother of their God-chosen leader and a high priest at the same time, whatever decision he made was always right. Thus, they went to him and submitted their sinful requests. It is not rare today to see people in church wanting to control church leaders and pastors.

Often, people know the course they want to pursue is wrong, but because they want to feel that it is right, they look for a man of God who can aid them in their sinful pursuits. They look for a man of God who will preach and tell them what they want to hear. They look for a man of God who will make them feel comfortable in their sins, because real transformation often calls for discomfort.

Short-term comfort and temporary pleasure help no one. John 3:16 (KJV) says: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jesus Christ died on the cross so that He could give us not just long-term comfort, but eternal comfort, comfort that is beyond long-lasting. Comfort and pleasure that is everlasting.

Seek the one true God, the only way, the only truth, and the only life (John 14:6). Seek God’s divine leadership and guidance. Be patient and trust in God. Trust in God’s timing. Do not deviate from your purpose because you feel you have waited too long for God to make things right. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and you will not regret it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Teach me to wait patiently on You and to trust in Your perfect timing. Deliver me from the temptation of creating idols in my life, whether people, possessions, or desires. Help me to hold fast to Your promises, to walk in obedience, and to seek Your will above my own. May my heart remain steadfast in faith, and may I find true joy and eternal comfort in You alone.

• Take a sheet of paper and write down 3 areas in your life where impatience has made you consider shortcuts (e.g., relationships, career, finances, spiritual growth).
• Next to each, write a Bible verse about waiting on God (such as Isaiah 40:31, Psalm 27:14, or Habakkuk 2:3).
• Pray over these areas daily for one week, asking God to replace impatience with trust in His timing.
