Get Truth Get Life

KEY TEXT: John 13:34-35 (KJ21) – “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

“In this last meeting with His disciples, the great desire which Christ expressed for them was that they might love one another as He had loved them. Again and again He spoke of this. “These things I command you,” He said repeatedly, “that ye love one another.” His very first injunction when alone with them in the upper chamber was, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” To the disciples this commandment was new; for they had not loved one another as Christ had loved them. He saw that new ideas and impulses must control them; that new principles must be practiced by them; through His life and death they were to receive a new conception of love. The command to love one another had a new meaning in the light of His self-sacrifice. The whole work of grace is one continual service of love, of self-denying, self-sacrificing effort. During every hour of Christ’s sojourn upon the earth, the love of God was flowing from Him in irrepressible streams. All who are imbued with His Spirit will love as He loved. The very principle that actuated Christ will actuate them in all their dealing one with another.” – The Desire of Ages, Page 677.2, Ellen G. White.

Jesus told us to love one another as He has loved us. Jesus Christ is longsuffering even to the worst sinner. He shows the greatest love to those who deserve it the least. In the same way, we need to be longsuffering toward those who have hurt us the most. We must not allow hatred or bitterness to control our hearts. We must not settle for the attitude, “I don’t hate them, but I don’t mind them either.” Instead, we are called to show them the greatest love, Christ’s love.

Ellen White writes: “No other influence that can surround the human soul has such power as the influence of an unselfish life. The strongest argument in favor of the gospel is a loving and lovable Christian.” (Ministry of Healing, p. 470). This means that our love toward others is not optional; it is the very evidence that Christ is alive in us. When we forgive, endure, and love even our enemies, we reveal the power of the gospel to a watching world.

The apostle Paul reminds us: “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.” — 2 Corinthians 8:9 (KJ21).

As followers of Christ, we must be willing to lose so that someone else can win, even our worst enemies. True Christlike love is marked by sacrifice, a willingness to give of ourselves so that others may be lifted up. Our devotion should not be limited to Sabbath alone, but should overflow into every day of the week as we serve God and bless others. While God promises to reward faithfulness, our motivation should not be rewards or recognition. Instead, we are called to give selflessly and love unconditionally, simply because God commands it, whether or not we ever receive earthly rewards or human praise.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me even when I was unworthy. Teach me to love as You love. Help me to let go of bitterness and to show kindness even to those who have hurt me. Give me the strength to love with Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
