Get Truth Get Life

KEY TEXT: John 9:4 (AMP) – “We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work.”

Jesus was sent by God the Father to do His work on earth. Notice that God did not send everybody, He sent Jesus. Yet Jesus did not say, “I must work,” but rather, “We must work.” The word we is plural. It signifies unity and shared responsibility in doing God’s work.

Jesus, being one with God, could have completed the entire work by Himself. However, He chose to involve others. Many of us avoid involving people in the assignments God has given us because we feel no one can do it better than we can. To save ourselves the stress of teaching and correcting someone else, we resolve to do everything alone.

“Leaders Afraid to Train Others—If in their ministry those whom we teach develop an energy and an intelligence even superior to that which we possess, we should be led to rejoice over the privilege of having a part in the work of training them. But there is danger that some in positions of responsibility as teachers and leaders, will act as if talent and ability have been given to them only, and that they must do all the work in order to make sure that it is done aright. They are liable to find fault with everything not originated by themselves. A great amount of talent is lost to the cause of God because many laborers, desiring to be first, are willing to lead, but never to follow. Although they closely scrutinize and criticize all that anyone else does, they are in danger of regarding that which goes forth from their hands as perfect.” – Christian Leadership, Page 56.2, Ellen G. White.

This approach actually slows down the work of God, and it pleases Satan. Unwillingness to patiently train others to serve with us is selfishness. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (KJV). Yet we often prefer to sharpen ourselves alone while refusing to sharpen others.

When Jesus chose His twelve disciples, He did not pick perfect men. Instead, He chose ordinary men—far beneath Him in character, knowledge, and spiritual maturity. He patiently worked with them to mold them into vessels of honor. His aim was that they would grow into the perfection that God requires: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48, KJV).

“Helping the Inexperienced—To those upon whom God has bestowed many talents, I am instructed to say: Help the inexperienced; discourage them not. Take them into your confidence; give them fatherly counsel, teaching them as you would teach students in a school. Watch not for their mistakes, but recognize their undeveloped talents, and train them to make a right use of these powers. Instruct them with all patience, encouraging them to go forward and to do an important work. Instead of keeping them engaged in doing things of minor importance, give them an opportunity to obtain an experience by which they may develop into trustworthy workers. Much will thus be gained to the cause of God.” – Christian Leadership, Page 55.3, Ellen G. White.

“Those placed in positions of responsibility should patiently seek to make others familiar with all parts of the work. This will reveal that they do not desire to be first, but that they are glad to have others become acquainted with details, and to become as efficient as they are. Those who faithfully fulfill their duty in this respect, will, in time, have standing by their side a large number of intelligent workers whom they have trained. Should they shape matters in accordance with narrow, selfish conceptions, they would stand almost alone.”— The Review and Herald, December 1, 1904, Ellen G. White.

Jesus was so faithful in keeping His disciples that He reported to the Father, “Those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition” (John 17:12, KJV). Out of the twelve, only Judas was lost, not because Jesus failed, but because Judas made a personal choice to harden his heart.

On that holy Sabbath day (John 9:14) when Jesus said the words of John 9:4, He was about to heal the man who had been blind from birth (John 9:1–7). Notice that even though He Himself performed the miracle, He still told His disciples, “We must work.” By simply observing His work, the disciples were working with Jesus. In God’s academy, learning and seeing are also part of the work. In His divine school, no moment is wasted.

Jesus emphasized doing God’s work “while it is day”—that is, while the opportunity is available. When a chance comes to glorify God, seize it. If you delay or procrastinate, you may never have that same opportunity again. The opportunities are not hidden or rare; they are right in front of us—every day, every hour, every moment. As long as we are alive, they are endless. When you know your God-given purpose, you will clearly recognize them.

But what about the opportunities we’ve already missed? Sadly, we cannot retrieve them. The best response is to repent before God and stay watchful for the next ones. So, work for God while it is day. Don’t delay, for the night is coming when no one can work (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for including me in the work of Your Kingdom. Forgive me for the opportunities I have missed, and help me to recognize and act upon the ones before me. Teach me to be patient in training and involving others, just as Jesus patiently trained His disciples. May I work faithfully while it is still day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
