Get Truth Get Life

KEY TEXT: John 15:3 (AMP) — “You are already clean because of the word which I have given you [the teachings which I have discussed with you].”

The Word of Christ, His teachings, truth, and message, has the power to wash the heart and mind from sin, falsehood, and doubt. God’s Word cleanses us by revealing truth, correcting error, and drawing us into obedience and faith. As Jesus said, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth” (John 17:17, KJ21).

In other words, Jesus’ words had purified the disciples’ hearts by leading them to repentance, faith, and love. They had accepted His teaching, believed His message, and surrendered to His will. As a result, they were already clean (inwardly renewed) and made ready for the life of spiritual fruitfulness to which He was calling them.

When Jesus said, “You are already clean,” He wanted His disciples to understand that they were not working for cleansing; they were working from cleansing. His Word had already done its transforming work in their hearts. Now, they could abide in Him and bear fruit.

This shows a vital truth of the Christian life: purity comes before productivity in God’s kingdom. We cannot bear the fruit of the Spirit, which encompasses love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance (Galatians 5:22–23, KJV) without first being cleansed by the Word of God.

The Word removes the spiritual “dust” that settles on our hearts through worldly influences. “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word” (Psalm 119:9, NKJV). As we listen, read, and live by the Word, it continually renews and purifies us, shaping us into the image of Christ.

Just as water refreshes the body, God’s Word refreshes the soul. It washes away guilt, renews the mind, and strengthens faith. Ephesians 5:25-26 (AMP) – ²⁵ Husbands, love your wives [seek the highest good for her and surround her with a caring, unselfish love], just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, ²⁶ so that He might sanctify the church, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word [of God].”

Cleansing by the Word is not a one-time act; it’s a continual process. As we daily abide in Christ and His Word abides in us (John 15:7), we remain clean, growing stronger in faith and bearing much fruit to the glory of God.

The Sabbath is a sign between God and us that He is the One who sanctifies us (Exodus 31:13). The Sabbath invites us to lay aside the dust of worldly striving and rest in the cleansing power of God’s Word. As we pause from labor, we allow His truth to wash over us, renewing our hearts and minds for the week ahead.

The Sabbath is more than physical rest; it is spiritual renewal. When we rest in God’s presence and reflect on His Word, our souls are cleansed from the noise and impurity of the world. Just as Jesus’ disciples were made clean through His words, we too are renewed each Sabbath through listening, believing, and obeying His truth.

Purity is not achieved through human effort but through abiding in Christ. When His Word fills our hearts, our lives naturally bear fruit that glorifies God. We begin to think, speak, and act in ways that reflect His character. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV).

“From this very error of following impulses instead of the Word of God, have grown up all the inconsistencies, absurdities, irregularities, and in some cases, as I do not doubt, licentious practices of some, called Perfectionists. Instead of cleaving closely to the Word of God, making it their only rule of life, writing it on their hearts, and setting it always, “as a frontlet between their eyes,” they have imbibed the idea that the Holy Spirit so dwells in them, as to be an infallible guide, without any reference to God’s plainly revealed will. And when a man steps on that ground, he may well expect, like him who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, to find himself wounded, stripped of his raiment, and left, at least, half dead. He throws himself defenseless among mortal foes; for the Word of God should be to him sword and shield. He might as well cast away rudder, and compass, and chart, and quadrant, and chronometer in mid-ocean, and expect God to guide him to his desired haven. Or as well, wandering among pit-falls in black midnight, cast away his only lamp, and think to walk safely by faith. The Holy Spirit has indeed been given to guide us into all truth, but all the truth we need to know is in the Bible; and all the guidance we need, is to a right understanding and practice of what the Bible contains.” – Views of Sanctification, Charles Fitch.

“But when God has plainly revealed to me that He is ready “to sprinkle clean water upon me, and make me clean from all my filthiness, and from all my idols, to cleanse me, and to save me from all my uncleanness when I inquire of Him to do it for me;” and when He has sworn that He will grant unto me, that “I being delivered out of the hand of my enemies, may serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him, all the days of my life, and has raised up Christ, an horn of salvation for me, to perform that covenant and oath, and has assured me that all the promises of God in Christ are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by me;” do I follow impulses and not the Bible, when I fully trust in Christ, that these promises and this oath of God will be fulfilled to me for Christ’s sake? Can I be in danger of going astray by thus cleaving to my own horn of salvation, whom God has raised up for me, and by just trusting in Him, that He will perform for me the very thing that He came to do?” – Views of Sanctification, Charles Fitch.

Therefore, let us continually draw near to the cleansing fountain of the Word. Let Scripture shape our attitudes, purify our motives, and renew our purpose, for only hearts made clean can truly bring forth lasting fruit for the kingdom of God. The prerequisite for high productivity is a pure heart.

Prayer

Almighty Father, thank You for cleansing me through Your Word. Wash my heart and mind each day from sin, fear, and doubt. Help me to abide in You and let Your Word take root deep within me, producing the fruit of righteousness. May my life reflect Your purity, peace, and power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

This week, let God’s Word cleanse your heart daily:

• Read a short passage from the Gospels each morning and ask, “Lord, what truth do You want to cleanse me with today?”
• Confess one area where you need renewal, and replace negative thoughts with a verse of promise (e.g., Psalm 51:10 — “Create in me a clean heart, O God.”)
• Today, spend quiet time meditating on a passage that reminds you of God’s faithfulness, allowing His truth to refresh your soul.

Reflection Verse:
John 15:7 (NKJV) – “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
