KEY TEXT: John 1:50 (AMP) – “Jesus replied, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe [in Me]? You will see greater things than this.””

Jesus spoke these words to Nathanael after Nathanael told Him in John 1:49 (AMP) – “Rabbi (Teacher), You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”

Nathanael told Jesus this after witnessing a supernatural phenomenon. Jesus told him that He had seen him before Philip called him, while he was still under the fig tree.

Nathanael saw this act as miraculous because Jesus was not physically present when he was under the fig tree. Jesus was not even there when Philip called him. Yet, Jesus narrated to him the exact physical location where he had been before Philip called him.

John 1:45–46 (AMP) – “⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote about—Jesus from Nazareth, the son of Joseph [according to public record].” ⁴⁶ Nathanael answered him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip replied, “Come and see.”

Before Nathanael saw Jesus, he had asked Philip, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” He asked this after Philip told him that the long-awaited Messiah had been found, and that He was from Nazareth. Nazareth was a small town with a relatively low population. It is estimated that during Jesus’ time, around 200–500 people were living there.

Secondly, the people in Nazareth were poor and viewed as insignificant by the larger society. Thirdly, they were heavily influenced by the Gentiles and considered less pure because the town was far from Jerusalem, the spiritual center. Therefore, to many Israelites at that time, nothing good was expected to come out of Nazareth.

When Nathanael asked Philip if anything good could come out of Nazareth, Philip did not explain further. Instead, he told him, “Come and see” (John 1:46). You need to experience God firsthand for yourself and not rely solely on other people’s information about Him.

Philip urged Nathanael to witness for himself. Psalm 34:8 (KJV) – “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.” Taste and see for yourself that God is real. Taste and see for yourself that God is good.

It didn’t take long for Nathanael to see that Jesus is the Son of God. He recognized it within the very first interaction. Jesus then told Nathanael that he would see greater things than what he had just witnessed. You may have seen God do something mighty in your life and be amazed at what He has done. Yet God is telling you, “You have seen nothing yet. You will see greater things than this.”

For Nathanael to see greater things than what he saw that day, he had to continue following Jesus. If he hadn’t followed Him, he would likely only hear about what Jesus had done—or not hear at all. Even if he heard, he wouldn’t know whether what he heard was true. But by following the Messiah, he would witness greater things firsthand.

When you follow Jesus, you will witness greater things than those you have already seen. It is a great blessing to follow Jesus and remain close to Him. Therefore, follow Jesus every day. Follow Him from Sunday to Sabbath.

“Principle is always exacting. No man can succeed in the service of God unless his whole heart is in the work and he counts all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ. No man who makes any reserve can be the disciple of Christ, much less can he be His colaborer. When men appreciate the great salvation, the self-sacrifice seen in Christ’s life will be seen in theirs. Wherever He leads the way, they will rejoice to follow.” – The Desire of Ages, Page 273.5, Ellen G. White.

When you follow Him, you will see things you have never seen before and things you never even imagined you could see. What God has already done for you—no matter how great it seems—is not as great as what He is about to do. Just follow Him.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me to follow Jesus every day. Open my eyes to see greater things You have prepared for my life. Strengthen my faith so that I may walk closely with You, trust Your leading, and rejoice in Your presence. Help me to taste and see Your goodness in every situation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity
Choose one area of your life where you want to see God more clearly, whether it is your spiritual life, your family, your work, or your health.

1. Write it down in your journal or on a small piece of paper.
2. Pray specifically over that area each day for one week, asking God to reveal Himself and show you “greater things.”
3. Pay attention throughout the week: look for answered prayers, unexpected blessings, moments of guidance, or inner peace.
4. Record what God does, even if it seems small. This will strengthen your faith and help you follow Jesus more closely, just as Nathanael did.
