THE LIGHT TO FOLLOW

THE LIGHT TO FOLLOW

John 8:12 (AMP) – “Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, ‘I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’”

In John 8, Jesus was addressing a very large crowd made up of both believers and unbelievers. Therefore, the message in John 8 is a general message meant for everybody.

Genuine Bible-adhering believers often have more clarity on various issues in life when compared to unbelievers. However, they do not have clarity on everything, because each day presents a new experience. Secondly, the Word of God has infinite revelations that no one can exhaust. Sometimes one may face familiar situations, and other times, they may face unfamiliar experiences. On the other hand, unbelievers often lack clarity on many life issues. They read many books, listen to many people, and try numerous suggested methods to discover which way is best for them.

Jesus understands this plight that both believers and unbelievers face. Jesus does not want anyone to be confused, for He is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33, KJV). He wants everyone to have clarity on everything they need clarity on.

Therefore, He tells us to follow Him so that our lives may be brighter and clearer. This is because He is the Light of the world (John 8:12, KJV). When we follow Him, we shall not walk in darkness, neither shall we remain in darkness (John 12:46, KJV).

Picture a dark forest that you are finding difficult to navigate. You can hardly move because you are surrounded by darkness. When a bright light comes on in that forest, it becomes easy for you to move. You can move confidently because everything is clear. The light does not move for you; it simply makes your movement easier.

John 1:1 (KJV) -“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

John 1:14 (KJV) -“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

To have light, we must follow Jesus. Jesus is the Word of God. Therefore, the best way to have clarity in life is by following God’s Word (Psalm 119:105; Psalm 119:130, KJV). It is by fully obeying and doing what the Bible instructs us to do that our paths become clearer and we experience good success (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1–3, KJV).

Isaiah 58:13–14 (KJV) – “13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.”

Matthew 5:14–16 (KJV) – “14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

As children of the Most High God, we are the light of the world. Jesus is not physically on earth at the moment, and some people may not have the ability or patience to read the Bible (especially those who know nothing about it). Many of these may be unbelievers. As lights in this dark world, they are watching our personal lives to draw examples of how to make their own lives better (Philippians 2:15, KJV). We should not hide ourselves under a bushel. We should go out and interact with as many people as possible. However, as we interact with them, we must keep our lamps bright so that their dark paths may be illuminated (Proverbs 4:18, KJV).

We do God an injustice when we do not allow our lives to shine as brightly as He intends them to. We do injustice to God when we keep quiet about the Sabbath or the need to obey all the other commandments. We do injustice to the kingdom of God when we avoid interacting with people simply because they are different from us (Matthew 9:10–13, KJV). At times, we may be trying to avoid bad company so that our good morals are not corrupted (1 Corinthians 15:33, KJV). However, this is not a call to cowardice; this calls for prayer before we interact with anyone. The purpose of that prayer should be that we turn people to Jesus, and not that they turn us toward darkness (James 1:5; Jude 1:23, KJV).

“In actual experience Christ has overcome the world, and how great is His love to us when He invites us to come to Him in all our afflictions, distresses, heartaches, and perplexities, with the assurance that He will help us. He will bring health and brightness into our lives. If we place our hand in the hand of Jesus Christ, He will place our feet on solid rock, a better foundation than we ever had before. He will make us more strong in His strength and He will work with all our efforts.”The Upward Look, p. 162.4, Ellen G. White

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus as the Light of the world. Help me to follow Him fully, to walk in Your Word, and to reflect Your light wherever I go. Keep my lamp burning bright so that others may see You through my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

  1. Read John 8:12 and Psalm 119:105 slowly.
  2. Ask yourself: “Is there any area of my life where I am still walking in partial darkness?”
  3. Write down one habit, choice, or relationship that needs alignment with God’s Word.
  4. Pray and take one deliberate step this week to walk more fully in the light.

“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”
Ephesians 5:8 (KJV)
