BE FRUITFUL AT ALL TIMES

BE FRUITFUL AT ALL TIMES

KEY TEXT: Mark 11:12-14 (AMP) – “12 On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He was hungry. [Matt 21:18-22] 13 Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if He would find anything on it. But He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, “No one will ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.”

Christ saw a fig tree from a distance (Mark 11:13). He noticed its leaves and moved closer to see if He could find any fruit on it. Unfortunately, He found nothing.

The Creator designed the fig tree to produce figs for people to eat (Genesis 1:11-12). From a distance, Jesus saw the leaves and expected to find fruit, but there was none (Mark 11:13-14). Therefore, He cursed the fig tree. He cursed it because of its unfruitfulness. Although it could bear fruit, it produced none. Unfruitfulness attracts curses (Deuteronomy 28:15-68) while fruitfulness attracts blessings (Deuteronomy 28:1-13).

Was it unfair for Jesus to curse the fig tree for not producing fruit since it was not the season for figs?

A fig tree usually produces leaves and early figs (called “taqsh”) together. If a tree has leaves, it should also have some early fruit, even if the main season has not yet arrived (Luke 13:6-9). So when Jesus saw a leafy fig tree but found no fruit at all, it symbolized false appearance—outward signs of life but inward barrenness (Matthew 23:27-28).

This was not just about the fig tree. It was a divine lesson for human beings, especially believers (1 Corinthians 10:11). Times and seasons are determined by God (Ecclesiastes 3:1; Acts 1:7), but that is no excuse for being unfruitful. When you are aligned with God’s Word, you should remain fruitful at all times—even before your season of breakthrough.

John 15:16 (AMP) – “You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed and placed and purposefully planted you, so that you would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit will remain and be lasting, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name [as My representative] He may give to you.”

God has chosen you, and He wants you to be fruitful at all times. There are seasons when you are going to be more fruitful than others. There are seasons that your fruitfulness will be a blessing to many people, while there are seasons that your fruitfulness will be a blessing to only a few people or just one person. Many people did not go to the fig tree to get fruit because they knew it was not the season for figs. Jesus approached the fig tree because He expected it to at least have some little fruit to satisfy His hunger. You may not have the capacity to serve many people at the moment, but you have the capacity to serve at least one more person other than yourself. Be fruitful.

You cannot say that because you don’t yet have a good job, or because you have not graduated, you are unable to be fruitful. Discover what you can do with your God-given abilities (1 Peter 4:10). Being a blessing to others does not always require money. You can bless others through your words (Ephesians 4:29) and actions (Galatians 6:9-10).

Refrain from being unfruitful like the cursed fig tree. Be fruitful at all times (John 15:1-8).

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for making me fruitful. Please help me to be fruitful at all times. I pray this, trusting and believing in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

This week, pick one area of your life where you can bear fruit right now. It doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. For example:

  • Speak one word of encouragement to someone each day (Proverbs 16:24).
  • Share something you have with someone in need, even if it’s small (Luke 6:38).
  • Pray for a friend, colleague, or family member consistently (James 5:16).

Write it down, commit to it for 7 days, and at the end of the week, reflect: “Did my life bear fruit that blessed someone else?”
