WHEN REVERENCE MEETS REJOICING

KEY TEXT: Psalm 2:11 (KJV) – “Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.”

  • “Fear” (יְרֵאָה, yir’ah) – This Hebrew word often means reverence, awe, or deep respect rather than terror. It conveys a profound recognition of God’s power and authority.
  • “Trembling” (רְעָדָה, ra‘adah) – This word means shaking or quaking, often associated with overwhelming reverence, humility, or submission before God’s majesty.

The verse calls for reverent worship of God, recognizing His authority with both joyful submission and deep respect. The “trembling” does not suggest fear in a negative sense but rather a recognition of God’s greatness that inspires awe and humility. It highlights the balance of rejoicing in God’s presence while maintaining a deep reverence for Him.

There is a way to serve God. You don’t just serve God anyhow. You serve God with reverence, awe, and deep respect, profoundly recognizing His power and authority.

“True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His presence.” – True Education, Page 149.2, Ellen G. White.

When you are serving God, you must recognize that He is all-powerful (omnipotent), all-knowing (omniscient), and He is everywhere (omnipresent). You need to recognize that God is the ultimate leader of the work that you are doing, and not yourself. When you recognize that God is the ultimate leader, you will prioritize God in your life. You will pray and study the Bible daily as the first thing when you wake up. You will not work on Sabbath to get that extra coin.

Some people, when they hold certain leadership positions in the church, think that they are the ultimate leaders and want everything to be centered around them. They are not humble enough to accept a decision that is not from them. For them to be comfortable, a decision has to come from them. They forget it is God’s work and think it is their own work. Some of them are bosses in their various offices and careers. They are used to lording over their subordinates and want to bring the same attitude into God’s service.

A full-time Christian should recognize that God’s service is not confined within the perimeters of the church. God’s service is part and parcel of a Christian’s daily life. When you are at school, at home, or at work, you should be conducting God’s service.

If we recognized God’s authority, we wouldn’t be doing some of the sinful practices that we are doing. If we recognized that God is everywhere, we wouldn’t be sinning behind closed doors. If we recognized that God is all-knowing, we wouldn’t attempt to deceive Him by deceiving others. If we recognized that God is all-powerful, we would be humble, recognize His power, and fully submit to it.

When we praise God, when we rejoice, we need to do it with utmost humility but with our entire hearts. Our motives for singing should not be for others to hear how good we sound, but to praise God. God should be at the center of all our worship practices. God should be at the center of everything we do.

Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Prayer

Our Father in Heaven,Teach me to serve You with reverence and joy. Let every act of service spring from a heart that honors Your greatness and humbly submits to Your will. Help me remember that You are the true leader in all that I do. May my life reflect Your glory in my home, work, and worship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activity

Take a moment this week to evaluate one area of your life where you serve—whether in church, at home, or in your community. Ask yourself:

  • “Am I serving with reverence and humility?”
  • “Is my motive to glorify God or myself?”
Then, pray before you serve, dedicating that specific act of service to God. Let it be a conscious expression of awe, gratitude, and joyful obedience.
