KEY TEXT: Philippians 4:19 (KJV) – “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
God may not always give you everything you want, but He will surely provide you with everything you need. The environment and situation you are in are perfect for your present time. As long as a person is alive, God supplies everything they need. God places everyone in various situations and environments for a purpose, and the primal goal is for His name to be glorified. Therefore He wants you to pray and ask Him to supply what you want Him to provide. He already knows what you need, but He wants you to pray to develop a relationship with Him.
James 4:2 (KJV) – “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”
The Bible highlights the various methods we use to obtain what we want. It talks about how we often struggle to get what we want by sinful means, yet we still do not receive what we want. People go to great lengths and do whatever they can to get what they want but neglect prayer. Many people trust in their hard work and abilities more than in the power of prayer and worshipping God. They believe they can solve their problems and God does not need to help them. Only when their efforts become fruitless and they realize their powerlessness do they go to God for help.
God has given us an easier way to solve our most challenging problems, and that is through prayer. Worshipping God connects you to God, the source of infinite power. Once you connect with Him, there is no limit to the heights you can reach. If you don’t connect with Him, you will struggle, and you will still not be able to get what you want. You may get money through corruption or other forms of theft, but the riches you get are accursed. Therefore, bringing you more problems than you had before.
“But many have not a living faith. This is why they do not see more of the power of God. Their weakness is the result of their unbelief. They have more faith in their own working than in the working of God for them. They take themselves into their own keeping. They plan and devise, but pray little, and have little real trust in God. They think they have faith, but it is only the impulse of the moment. Failing to realize their own need, or God’s willingness to give, they do not persevere in keeping their requests before the Lord.”- Prayer, Page 71.2, Ellen G. White.
Therefore, when seeking a supply of anything, you need to go to the source of all supplies and offer a prayer of supplication. You cannot go to buy cooking utensils from a person who supplies vehicle spare parts. You cannot go to buy electronics from the grocery store. Whatever good thing you need is with God because He is the Creator of all good things. Therefore, go to Him, for He is the source of all good things (James 1:17). Ask God to give you whether it is a spiritual gift or a spiritual fruit you want to have. Not only is God able to provide you with spiritual things, but also material things.
James 4:3 (KJV) – “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”
There is no problem with asking God for a car or a house as long as you are requesting from a righteous motive. Don’t ask for a big mansion because you want to be ahead of your friends or to prove your enemies wrong. Ask with a righteous motive that aims to glorify God first.
Let us look at Hannah’s Prayer:
1 Samuel 1:10-13 (NKJV) – “10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. 11 Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.” 12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.”
“Hannah Was a Woman of Prayer—Hannah brought no reproach against her husband for his unwise marriage. The grief which she could share with no earthly friend, she carried to her Heavenly Father, and sought consolation from Him alone who hath said, “Call upon me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver thee.” There is a mighty power in prayer. Our great adversary is constantly seeking to keep the troubled soul away from God. An appeal to Heaven by the humblest saint is more to be dreaded by Satan than the decrees of cabinets or the mandates of kings.” – Prayer, Page 131.2, Ellen G. White.
Hannah was sorrowful because she did not have a child, and her co-wife Peninnah provoked her severely because she did not have children (1 Samuel 1:6-7). As a result, she was always sorrowful to the extent of skipping meals. Hannah prayed to God while weeping in anguish and asked for a child. In her prayer, she was specific about the type of child she wanted: a male child. When we pray, we are rarely specific to God on what we want. You are praying for a job. Which type of job do you want? What salary do you desire to have? Don’t be ashamed to ask God for what you want. Mention it all to God. Your prayers don’t have to sound perfect. You need to pray earnestly and sincerely from the heart. The Holy Spirit will refine your petitions before presenting to God the Father.
God understands that we have an imperfect nature. Therefore, He does not expect perfect prayers from us. He will meet us at our point of weakness or imperfection. Hannah prayed silently from her heart. No one could tell what she was praying for. Eli thought she was drunk. There is no problem with offering silent prayers to God. One can pray silently or loudly.
Nevertheless, sometimes it is good to pray silently so the enemy does not know what you are praying for and chooses to frustrate you. Hannah did not even tell Eli, the priest, what she was praying for. She only told him of her sorrowful spirit. People have a misconception that for one’s prayers to be answered, the pastor must pray for them. Some false prophets have taken this opportunity to make a business from people’s problems. They ask you for money to pray for you so your prayers can be answered.
God will listen to you if you go to Him directly. You don’t have to pass through anybody. However, there is no problem if you request your friends or someone you consider a spiritual authority to pray for you. If more people pray for something, the prayers can be more effective than when one person prays. Nonetheless, God can still answer one person’s prayers, as He did numerous times in the Bible.
“Hannah’s prayer was unheard by mortal ear but entered the ear of the Lord of hosts. Earnestly she pleaded that God would take away her reproach and grant her the boon most highly prized by women of that age—the blessing of motherhood. As she wrestled in prayer, her voice uttered no sound, but her lips moved, and her countenance gave evidence of deep emotion. And now another trial awaited the humble suppliant. As the eye of Eli, the high priest, fell upon her, he hastily decided that she was intoxicated. Feasting revelry had well-nigh supplanted true godliness among the people of Israel. Instances of intemperance, even among women, were of frequent occurrence, and now Eli determined to administer what he considered a deserved rebuke. “How long wilt thou be drunken? Put away thy wine from thee.” – Prayer, Page 132.1, Ellen G. White.
Some people take their petitions to pastors because they are lazy to go through the spiritual disciplines of seeking God. If God has put a fixed time to give you a particular blessing, He will provide you with the blessing at the time He has set. Nobody will make Him give it to you earlier than He chooses. For example, the Bible says that no one knows the day or the hour when Jesus will return. No one can force Jesus to return on a specific date through their prayers.
There are some false members of the clergy in the name of Bishops, priests, pastors, apostles, and prophets who use divination powers to do various wonders and miracles in the lives of their congregants. When one goes to them, they may immediately give that person whatever He is asking for. The person ends up being happy for a short period before an enormous calamity befalls them. Let us be careful of such people. The Devil has nothing to give. He will provide you with something minimal but eventually takes away something massive.
People who have visited witches or devil-worshipping cults to solve minor problems end up losing more than they got from those evil shrines. A certain pastor testified how he joined a Devil worshipping cult to grow his church and earn more money. He said he got the riches he desired but ended up sacrificing six members from his church every year because that is what they had agreed with the cult leaders.
The cult leaders did not tell him that a time would come when he would be forced to sacrifice his mother and son. That time came, and He had to sacrifice his mother and son, leaving him miserable and depressed. After doing that interview on YouTube, the cult demanded that he should sacrifice his wife as a penalty for exposing them, but he refused. They ended up killing him. The Devil has nothing to give because He cannot create anything.
Hannah prayed till Eli thought she was drunk. Sometimes when you are earnestly seeking God, people may misunderstand you. Some of them may judge you and say all manner of evil falsely against you. Others may go to the extent of discouraging you. Don’t stop seeking Him. Focus on God and keep your ears shut to negative comments.
“Hannah had been communing with God. She believed that her prayer had been heard, and the peace of Christ filled her heart. Hers was a gentle, sensitive nature, yet she yielded neither to grief nor to indignation at the unjust charge of drunkenness in the house of God. With due reverence for the anointed of the Lord, she calmly repelled the accusation and stated the cause of her emotion. “No, my Lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink but have poured out my soul before the Lord. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.” Convinced that his reproof had been unjust, Eli replied, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.” – Prayer, Page 132.2, Ellen G. White.
1 Samuel 1:19-20 (NKJV) – “19 Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah, his wife, and the Lord remembered her. 20 So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son and called his name Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”
God finally answered Hannah’s prayer and blessed them with a male child whom they named Samuel. God will supply you with all your needs as long as you ask according to His will. It was God’s will for Hannah to have a child even though He did not give her a child immediately because God is the one who commanded us to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth (Genesis 1:28).
Therefore, when we pray, we need to be aware of what God’s will is and what is not. The best way we can be mindful of that is through Bible study. Studying God’s Word gives you knowledge of His will. Hence, when you ask, you ask without a doubt because you know you have asked according to His will. Perfect health is God’s will, gaining freedom is God’s will, getting a job is God’s will, and starting your business is God’s will. Traveling is God’s will, getting married is God’s will, socializing is God’s will, and being materially wealthy is God’s will. God’s will is quite broad.
I may not be able to mention everything that is God’s will here, but you can study your Bible to know God’s will. Hannah promised God that if He gave her a male child, she would give the child to God’s service. When you ask God for riches, is the glory of God at the top of your mind? Do you intend to use those riches for God’s service? When you ask for a husband or a wife, does the glory of God come first?
1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV) – “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
Whatever you do, do it to the glory of God. Therefore, when you ask God for anything, ask to use it to the glory of God. You can attach something specific to it. For example, if God blesses you with a job you are going to contribute in building the church. If your heart is genuinely willing to glorify God, God will answer your prayers and give you what you need.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV) – “Pray without ceasing.”
“Our Prayers Are to Be Earnest and Persistent—God does not say, Ask once, and you shall receive. He bids us ask. Unwearyingly persist in prayer. The persistent asking brings the petitioner into a more earnest attitude, and gives him an increased desire to receive the things for which he asks. Christ said to Martha at the grave of Lazarus, “If thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God.” John 11:40.” – Prayer, Page 71.1, Ellen G. White.
Luke 18:1 (KJV) – “And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”
“Our prayers are to be as earnest and persistent as was the petition of the needy friend who asked for the loaves at midnight. The more earnestly and steadfastly we ask, the closer will be our spiritual union with Christ. We shall receive increased blessings because we have increased faith.” – Prayer, Page 71.3, Ellen G. White.
“Do Not Let Go of God’s Arm Too Soon—I asked the angel why there was no more faith and power in Israel. He said, “Ye let go of the arm of the Lord too soon. Press your petitions to the throne, and hold on by strong faith. The promises are sure. Believe ye receive the things ye ask for, and ye shall have them.” I was then pointed to Elijah. He was subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly. His faith endured the trial. Seven times he prayed before the Lord, and at last the cloud was seen. I saw that we had doubted the sure promises, and wounded the Saviour by our lack of faith. Said the angel, “Gird the armor about thee, and above all take the shield of faith; for that will guard the heart, the very life, from the fiery darts of the wicked.” If the enemy can lead the desponding to take their eyes off from Jesus, and look to themselves, and dwell upon their own unworthiness, instead of dwelling upon the worthiness of Jesus, His love, His merits, and His great mercy, he will get away their shield of faith and gain his object; they will be exposed to his fiery temptations. The weak should therefore look to Jesus, and believe in Him; they then exercise faith.” — Early Writings, Page 73, Ellen G. White.
GOD BLESS YOU!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for being the source of all good things. You have promised to supply all my needs according to Your riches in glory through Christ Jesus. Teach me to trust in You more than I trust in my own efforts. Help me to pray with faith and right motives, always seeking Your glory above my own desires. I surrender my wants to You and ask that You provide what is best in Your perfect time. Strengthen my faith, and help me pray persistently without giving up. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
